~~~~~Scrolling on Instagram seemed like an everyday sort of thing to do, yet for Jeon Y/N, it was a source of inspiration. Working as an independent artist gave him a lot of artistic freedom. He wasn't a big hit like his sister, but the music he created came from his personal experiences, giving them a sense of connection to his listeners.
As he scrolled on his private Instagram account, he saw some posts from an old friend of his: Jang Wonyoung. The two were friends back in SOPA, being in the same classes and all. Wonyoung was a close friend of his, the two always hanging out together between classes, Wonyoung practicing her English with Y/N, and Y/N sharing his song ideas with her. The two even garnered a reputation of being a power couple of their year (being the younger brother of Produce 101 first place winner and being first place of Produce 48), although they quickly quashed the rumours. It is not to say that the thought of being more than just friends didn't cross Y/N's mind before, but he chose to remain best friends, supporting Wonyoung through her career of IZ*ONE and IVE.
Looking at Wonyoung's Instagram posts, Y/N couldn't help but notice that her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. Her smile was radiant, yet there was that sense that it was merely for show. The smile didn't seem fully genuine, in fact, it felt slightly bittersweet, like there was something that was hidden deepdown.
A further dive into the posts revealed a whole mass of malicious comments from haters. The more Y/N scrolled through, the sadder he became. What happened to the girl who dreamt of standing on the world stage with her music? She didn't deserve all the hate!
At this thought, a stream of lyrics came into Y/N's mind. Seizing the moment, he quickly opened up his notebook, and started to jott down ideas.
Soon, a new song took the world by storm. But it was not a song by some idol from a large entertainment company. No, the artist in question was none other than Y/N Jeon, whose song "Girl on the Internet" literally took the internet by storm. Everyone, be it in Korea or in other parts of the world had heard of the song. And if they didn't know who Y/N Jeon was before, they definitely did now.
The muse of the song did not know of the origins of the song, until one eventful day, where, tired of her life and work, she plopped down on the couch in the IVE dorm alone and turned on the TV. As she aimlessly scrolled through her phone, she suddenly heard a voice from the TV that instantly grabbed her attention.
"So Y/N-ssi, I have a question about Girl on the Internet: I'm assuming that this song like all your previous ones have a muse behind them, yet this one feels so real. Is there anything you can tell us about the story behind it?"
"Certainly! Well this song was written about a friend of mine from school that I won't name on TV. I was scrolling on social media when I saw their photos and the comments on them. The comments were all pretty mean, yet the friend of mine was still smiling. There were something's about that smile, you know when you see a smile and you can feel if there's something behind the smile? I felt that her smile didn't quite reach her eyes, there was something pent up behind it, like sadness. And that she was trying to convince the whole world that she's fine in front of all the cameras. That's why I wrote this song: to let people know that they are never alone, and that they don't have to pretend or convince the whole world that they're fine even when they aren't."
