When Luffy Finally reached Laughtale, his crew watched on. Even while fighting their own battles, they watched Luffy fight his grandfather. They watched him with long and held gulps of air. The looks in their eyes told a story of questions. Questions of the like to wonder. Wondering if he'd hate Garp? They wondered if he'd resent Garp even! Why do people seem to think he'd hate his grandfather? Ha! As if he'd ever hate him! Sure, Luffy knows Garp had done some things that weren't perfect. He knew his grandfather was a part of actions that were questionable at best even! But, ...he also knew his grandfather felt...
...Bad about them.
He didn't do it because he wanted to, he did it because he felt he needed to.
Luffy knows he's done the same.
When the going Merry had been... broken...
When his Merry had been broken, hell! When Ussop's going Merry had been broken,
He hadn't wanted to leave it. he wanted to keep going but deep down he knows that wasn't going to be a safe choice. It could've been a hurtful situation, a deadly action at the end of the day.
In the instance of Marineford war, well he knows on Garp's side at least, the Whitebeard pirates winning was his broken ship. Sure Garp knew Whitebeard was in the right. He knew the Whitebeards we're good people but if they had won well, ... what about the floodgates of new more gutsy and confident less kind pirates. Just as if Luffy had kept the ship and wound up stranding his crew in the dying ship, having the Whitebeards winning was the same. It would've been a good run in the short term, but... after the war aftermath calmed down, who knows what calamities those new types of pirates would've provided to the world.
