In the story, the deities mentioned are part of the Voodoo religion, also referred to as the Lwa or Lao spirits. For simplicity's sake, the author uses the term "god," although there are thousands of gods within Voodoo, each associated with a particular element. Some gods have multiple elements and thus multiple names, but for ease of understanding, the author has only used one name for each god unless otherwise stated.
