A FEW DAYS LATER
Selene was lying on a sun-drenched meadow, enjoying the warmth of its golden rays. With her eyes closed, she was listening to the calming symphony of nature that surrounded her. The rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds formed a soothing lullaby, putting her to sleep. Her peace was suddenly interrupted by the persistent call of a familiar voice.
- Selene! – Lux's voice echoed true the meadow, waking Selene from her nap.
She sat up, disoriented, and scanned her surroundings with a drowsy gaze. Placing her face in her palms, she sighed with the remnants of sleep still clinging to her. Concerned Lux approached her.
- You okay? – she asked, bending down to her friend.
- Yeah – Selene muttered. – I just... can't sleep lately, it's killing me.
Lux, concerned, raised her eyebrows and settled down next to her friend.
- Why? What's wrong? – she asked with genuine curiosity.
Selene took a deep breath, her expression revealing the weight of her confession. She shook her head, meeting Lux's eyes.
- I've been having horrible nightmares.. every.. single.. night – she drawled.
- Sorry to hear that.. it happens sometimes – said Lux, offering a comforting response. – Have you been eating well lately? I heard eating too much fat can cause nightmares.
In response, Selene let out a breathy laugh.
- It's not about food – answered Selene and continued with her voice tinged with a sense of unease. – I keep seeing some.. monster in my dreams. Every night he haunts me. His voice, his face, his.. aura.. it's creeping me out. – Lux widened her eyes.
- Maybe your brain is tricking you after the forest incident? – suggested, attempting to find a rational explanation. Selene, however, shook her head, her eyes reflecting confusion and distress.
- I don't know.. it's weird. The dreams feel so weird. When I wake up, it's like... - she paused, trying to gather her thoughts - ...like he's still watching me. I don't even know how to explain it.
- Like a daydream? – Lux inquired, furrowing her brow as she tried to get the better understanding of her friend's experience.
- Maybe.. – answered Selene, searching for words. - ..but it's something else.
Silence settled between the girls, as Selene was absently fiddling with a blade of grass, her eyes fixed downwards. Lux, with her concern deepening, finally spoke up.
- How does the.. monster look? – she asked gently, her eyes focused on Selene as she waited for the details.
- Big horns.. – the other girl started – red glowing eyes.. uhh, his piercing gaze – she shivered involuntarily as she spoke. After a brief pause, she continued. – Terrifying face.. oh! – she suddenly remembered one detail – and that weapon.. the creepy eye in the middle of it.. following my every move – she added, her voice cracking with palpable fear. Lux fixed her posture as a particular element caught her attention.
- An eye on the weapon? – she inquired, seeking clarification. Selene nodded.
- Do you have any idea? – the other mage asked. Lux settled in front of her,
- I'm not sure.. it could be anything, but that weapon.. I just thought about a darkin.
- A darkin? – confusion visible on Selene's face as her brows rose. She waited for her friend to give her more details.
