Irene
"Happy birthday, my beautiful daughters!" Dad exclaimed.
"It's 12 a.m.; we weren't even born yet. We arrived on Earth at 8 a.m. You know how hard it is for me to fall asleep," Ilene groaned from her bed, not happy with our overenthusiastic father.
"Ilene, stop being a crybaby. Dad baked a cake for us. Come on, wake up, baby sister. Look, it even has pink frosting, just like you have loved it since you came out of the womb," I said, matching my dad's enthusiasm. We are one hell of an overenthusiastic and positive family. After the death of Mom, everything changed, but we tried to live each day to the fullest.
"Why are you guys standing at the door? A candle is on the brink of dying. Hurry up!" Ilene responded, trying to match our enthusiasm but failing miserably.
"Irene, go sit next to Ilene. It's your birthday too," Dad said, pushing me to sit next to Ilene. Ilene and I are twins. I am the older one, and I don't fail to show it. Dad took lots of pictures, and surprisingly, cake tastes good.
"Tomorrow is a school day. You can skip it. It's up to you guys. I am going to bed." Dad left the room, leaving me with Ilene.
"Ilene, it's your turn to be Ida Lockwood. You are my social butterfly. You are going to shine brightly, like a star. If you don't go tomorrow, then people will talk about missing school on our birthday. Tomorrow is Friday, which means if you don't go tomorrow, then next week, which is my turn to be Ida Lockwood, I have to answer all these questions about not attending school on our birthday, which I don't want. You can go all out celebrating our birthday at school." I explained, taking a long breath, which I didn't realize I was holding. I was expecting a quick reply, but she is looking at me like I said an absurd thing. Without saying a single word, she lay down on the bed.
"Irene, don't you think it's stupid we have to hide our identity? We can't be ourselves in front of people. We don't fit here among werewolves. For God's sake, we are humans, and we deserve to live in a human settlement. The only reason people are nice in school is because our dad is the richest person in the pack, and not to forget having Alpha Kaden back. If we were normal people, we would be doing labor-intensive work, like in another pack. I wonder if Mom was right about a human settlement in the north, isolated from the world. They killed our mother, and you almost passed away. Thank God you are alive. It won't be long before they come and end our bloodline. We are in the pack, but look at us, isolated from everyone. The only people who can enter the house are you, me, and Dad. I don't think this is living. Mom wouldn't want us to live like that. I miss her, Irene." Ilene completed her sentence with tears in her eyes. She isn't wrong, but the circumstances are complicated. I wish we could run away, but that's not possible; leaving the pack without protection from Alpha is inviting death for a mere human like us. I hold her in a tight hug.
"Ilene, there is a reason why we are hiding Irene Lockwood and Ilene Lockwood from the world. There are several instances in which our safety is compromised, because of which we can't even leave the pack. If, God forbid, one of us dies, then there will be another one to continue the bloodline because, for the rest of the world, only one daughter is alive. You know that our father went to great lengths to shift us here from our old colony. We have to be grateful for what we have. Go to sleep. You have school to attend tomorrow. Happy birthday, Ilene. I love you. Goodnight." With that, I pecked her head and left the bed to head back to my room. It is already half past 1 a.m. She needs sleep for school.
"Happy Birthday, Irene. You are the best oldest sibling I could ask for. You know that I am the prettiest twin," she said, completing her sentence with giggles. For God's sake, we are identical twins. We look exactly the same. We don't even need a mirror because we can look at one another to see what we look like. She likes to get me on my nerves because it gives her joy for mere seconds. If it were another time, I would have replied back, but after the conversation we had, I decided to just nod my head and leave the room.
I opened my eyes to see the sun out there, shining brighter than yesterday. I look at the clock to see that it is already 10 a.m. I will have a late morning. I saw a note on my side table. I look at the note. It is from Ilene, who states that she left for school and didn't want to wake up the cute little potato. Cute little potato, I scoffed. What does she think of herself? I got ready for the day and decided to head to the kitchen for breakfast, even though it was too late for breakfast. I made my way to the stairs when I heard the voice coming from the living room. The voice belongs to Dad and Alpha Kaden. It looks like Alpha Kaden just entered the house. It is unusual for him to come to our place. I decided to continue to walk before I heard the sentence, which made me stop."They are coming for us, Derek."
Eric
"Why are we attacking the Moonrise Pack, Father?" I asked, knowing full well that this man is hell-bent on acquiring as much power as he can. I guess a man can never have enough.
"Why? Are you scared to go into battle?" I extended the plan for months so that you could have your 18th birthday and roam around to find your mate, but guess what, son, you don't have a mate to take care of now. So stop being a little bitch and prepare everything for a battle. Why are you still here? Do I have to repeat myself, or have you gone deaf? Father spat his words, annoyed by my question. I just asked him a normal question: Why does he have to bring up the fact that I haven't met my mate? Why is he adding salt to my wounds? He is a mean old man. I went to the training ground to gather our warriors for the upcoming battle.
"Who do we have here? Eric Harrington, the future alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack?" From your expression, I can tell that the talk didn't go well with Alpha Kevin. Alex said, maintaining his constant smirk on his stupid face.
"We are going into battle, Alex. Gather all the warriors and go to the inventory to check for weapons. Why are you giving me that look? I guess little Alex can't spend a minute away from his mate. You can back out if you want," I responded, maintaining the same voice pitch as his.
"Still salty about me having a mate before you. It's karma, brother. What if you find the mate in the Moonrise Pack? You never know." Alex winked at me with a grin before leaving the ground.
"Mate? Where? Moonrise Pack? I will pass that."
