"When I'm the one playing the fool."

I rounded the corner to Scott's workstation. There were very few people in his office, all of whom seemed heavily engrossed in whatever it was they were working on. Just before reaching his area, I stopped for a second and made sure that I had a sincere smile on my face. I stepped towards his desk and greeted, "Hi -"

Scott wasn't there.

I looked around and walked further but I didn't see any sign of him.

Is Scott lying to me? Is he really not working late like he said he was?

My heart started to pound as different scenarios flashed through my mind. I went back to his workstation, and my heart began to sink as I sat down on his chair. I pulled out my phone and dialed his number.

Scott answered on the third ring. "Hey, baby," he greeted chirpily.

"Where are you?"

"In the office. Didn't you get my message?" he asked, sounding confused.

This fucker is so smooth at lying. "I'm giving you another chance to answer. Where are you?" I snapped.

"I'm pretty sure I'm not lost, Mitch. I'm at the office," he insisted.

Does he really think he can get away with this? "Really?" My temper was starting to rise along with my voice. "Cause I'm at your office and I don't see any sign of you."

"You're what?!"

"I was going to surprise you with dinner. Guess I'm the one getting a surprise. This is so fucking cliche I -"

"Jesus christ!" he exclaimed before he dropped the call.

"Hello? Hello! Scott!" I hissed. I stared at my phone's screen to make sure that the call had indeed been dropped.

I knew it. It was only a matter of time. I was right all along.

My vision blurred as my eyes started to water. I didn't want to make a scene right there so I stood up from the chair and started to walk away when I heard him call my name.

"Mitch!"

I turned around to see Scott walking briskly towards me.

He's actually here? "Scott?"

He stopped when he was a foot away from me. "What are you doing here?"

"You're actually here," I said more to myself.

"Where did you think I was? I told you I was working late," he said, a little irritated.

"But... you weren't in your desk," I mumbled.

He raised his hand to show me a cup of what smelled to be coffee. "I took a break. I was at the pantry getting this."

"Oh..." I whispered.

"What are you doing here?" he asked again.

"I..." I stuttered. I felt so humiliated and so stupid. "I wanted to bring you dinner," I explained, raising my hands to show him the bags of takeout.

Scott sighed audibly. "Come."

We headed to the pantry and settled on one of the tables. There was a period of awkward silence until Scott asked, "What did you order?"

"Huh?"

"Food, Mitch. What did you bring me?" Scott's tone was devoid of any irritation or anger and he even had a smile on his face.

I was a little confused at his behavior but I answered anyway. "Our favorites from Chipotle."

"Oh, thank god. I. am. starving!" He started opening the bags and bringing out the food.

I didn't really understand what was going on so I just watched him.

He was heartily digging in on his burrito when he noticed that I still wasn't moving. "Aren't you going to eat?"

"Aren't you going to ask me about what just happened?"

Scott put down his food and wiped his lips with a napkin. "You thought I was lying, didn't you?"

I turned away from his gaze and fiddled with my fingers. "You weren't there and I..."

"Baby," he said softly as he reached for my hands. "I meant what I said. I don't plan on screwing us up."

I slowly looked up. "Are you mad?"

"Mad? No. You brought me my favorites, how can I get mad at you?" he replied with a smirk on his face.

"Scott..." I rolled my eyes. "Be serious."

He released my hand and crossed his arms over his chest. "A little disappointed. I get why you don't trust me but I was hoping that you'd have a little more faith in me."

I honestly felt ashamed for how I acted. "I screwed up, didn't I?"

"Maybe a teensy bit," he replied with a giggle..

"I'm sorry..." I whispered.

"It's all good, Mitch. To be honest, it doesn't come much of a surprise to me."

I wanted to ask him what exactly he meant and what he was expecting I would be doing but I kept my mouth shut instead.

"And on the bright side, I think you're extremely cute when you're jealous," he continued.

"Now you're just messing with me." I pouted.

He reached over and planted a chaste kiss on my lips. "You should see your face right now."

"I hate you." I rolled my eyes.

Scott chuckled lightly. "I love you." He picked up his burrito. "Now, can we get back to dinner? Food is getting cold."

I picked up my burrito and started eating. Scott and I then talked about each other's day. However my full attention wasn't on him since I kept thinking about how I felt about what just happened.

Obviously I was relieved that Scott wasn't lying to me, but a very small part of me was disappointed. And the fact that I even felt that way bothered me.

"Mitch?"

"Huh?"

"You okay?"

"Yes. I... uh," I stammered. "I'll eat the rest of this at home," I said, referring to my half-eaten burrito.

"Okay. I'll stay maybe two more hours then I'll head home, too. Are you staying or -"

"No, I'll go. See you at home later?"

"Yes, later."

We cleaned up and I put the leftovers back in the bag. We made our way back out and Scott walked with me to the elevator. While waiting, he kissed and hugged me goodbye.

The doors then opened and I stepped inside the elevator. Just before it closed, he smiled and said, "Hey, I love you, okay?"

"I love you, too.".

The doors closed and I was left alone with a half-eaten burrito and my wayward thoughts.

This little green monster is getting the best of me. I can't let this continue. Maybe it's about time I start letting go of my insecurities and my jealousy and start really trusting Scott more.
