Johnny doesn't make eye contact as his nurse reads his hospital bill out to him.
He doesn't listen either; he saw the number and knows he has nowhere near that amount of money.
He feels numb for the most part, though a tinge of guilt exists within him. This wouldn't be happening if he had just done it right.
"Johnny?" The nurse questions, and he nods while keeping his eyes on the floor."Sweetheart, you're going to be okay," she says, though her voice reveals how little sympathy she truly has.
He glances up at her and nods again, unable to force a smile. She gives Johnny the suicide prevention hotline number, along with a speech on how selfish he is for attempting to kill himself, before finally letting him go.
Johnny shamefully walks out, carrying a small bag of the clothing he was gifted while staying there, along with the $3,500 bill.
He couldn't afford living expenses, so he didn't expect to ever pay this back. While his faith in humanity somehow got even lower while looking at the bill, he realized he had 2 dollars to his name, since he left his wallet at the hotel.
That wouldn't matter to him, if he hadn't realized he didn't have enough money for the one thing he did need to buy.He left their hospital with nowhere to go, no means to go anywhere, and no transportation.
The boy didn't think of all the new possibilities, nor did he feel the effects of his newfound freedom.
He was free from everyone, everything that haunted him his whole life, and yet he felt as if he had only one option.
So the boy walked and walked, not planning on stopping until he store that sold what he needed. As he walked, he thought of his first day with her.
With the girl who saved his life.
With Macey Rodriguez.
