She surprised everyone when she acquired the ball, dodging through the other team as if they were mere bumps in the way of her destination, her destination; the goal. Nobody suspected a girl like her to win with such triumph, such skills and mindset of a bull and she bulldozed the enemies, knocking them down like pins in a bowling alley, poles in a horse race, stones in a river. Her hair tight in one long platt and mud on her face, completely unfasing her when she launched the ball into the net, winning the game of lost causes from a team nobody could compare to. The aftermath was like a film when she was lifted up into the air and carried on shoulders, her team mates screaming in incoherent chants, blasting her ears as the adrenaline and courage raged through her body.
When the night grew colder and rain buried the playing field, the winning girls were changing, gossiping and showering, washing off their golden skin stained brown from filth. As she scrubbed her dirt from her cheek she sustained a smile which had appeared on the field an hour ago. Happiness couldn't be happier if the emotion itself tried to be. Remembering her mothers screams, cheering her beloved daughter in the crowd as she threw the ball of gold into the dragons den. Her father, after the match embracing her like he hadn't seen her for years, singing praises and beautiful melodies to push her delight even further. She had always had such a supportive family which she would forever be great full for in her previous male dominated footballing career.
When her name was called from outside the showers all she could remember was the crowd cheering her name as she ran for her life across no man's land. Then another calling of her name and she woke up from her winnings and replied. Someone had left a bouquet of red and white carnations with a few red roses too. It had a message attached to the bouquet reading; "I knew you would win for us Evie!". This must have been an admirer or something, but she didn't have admirers, she was a highschool football player and she didn't have many close friend either, just sienna who had been her best friend for nine years and counting. They had been best friends since Evie had stood up for sienna in year 4 when Harry McGuire had called Sienna names like " leprechaun" and "carrot top". And sienna being too kind to do anything about it, Evie felt the duty to speak up and teach Harry some manners.
That's it, Evie would talk to Sienna about this secret sender and discover who sent the disguised confession. The next day at school, during form, Evie was tired as she had stayed up late daydreaming about who must have sent the flowers and what they meant. Sienna, sat in the same seat as always next to her best friend of nine years and was reading a book mindlessly, focused on the plot as she always was, Evie suspected. When Evie spoke up, mentioning the bouquet, Siennas eyes lit up, "wow, that's... different" she replied, however when Evie had no clue who had sent the flowers, Siennas face stirred in thought. "Maybe it was Liam" she teased to her bestie. Sienna knew Evie had found Liam attractive before and so teased her about the fact, always. "No no he wouldn't... would he?" To siennas surprise her partner in crime had fallen for a false report. Evie began to believe that Liam may have sent her the flowers, and the more she thought of the happiness spawning idealisation, the more she believed that it was true. She had noticed Liam talking to his friend about her sometimes and laughing with his friends while noticing her and Evie knew that he liked Her.After building courage and belief over a few days she found some forced courage to track Liam down and confront him about the flowers that she had kept well-groomed in her bedroom window. And when she did she got a response of laughter and rejection. He insulted her idealisation and warned her that it was a stupid thing to even think about. With tear stained cheeks from the broken heart she confided in her one true friend, Sienna.
With a hug from her supporting friend and comforting words, a confession was dug up. "I'm sorry he had said those things to you, he is a bad person for doing so, but... I'm glad he did" sienna responded to her friends heartbreak. "Because I can move on now?" Evie asked in comfort seeking, looking for a route which would tell her the resilience she was looking for. "Yes.. but also because I would feel confident enough to say this to you..." Sienna had hugged her best friend tightly, a growing anxiety in her stomach. "What do you mean?" Evie could never had guessed what her best friend of nine years had said to her but I'm sure you can. "I sent the carnations and roses to you, they mean love and good luck and are my way of saying... I love you, but not as a friend anymore" she had tried to be as straight forward as she could be beause she knew she wouldn't have the strength to repeat the confession of a lifetime. "What?" Evie was confused, shocked and not into her best friend. With sienna too sick to repeat what she said she just pulled Evie away from the hug and tried her best to make eye contact. "I can't, Sienna please tell me this is a joke?" But there was no joke in the way Siennas eyes looked at her Best Friend. Two girls sitting together, in regular comfort began a tense and sickly atmosphere that nobody is happy in.
Sitting in rejection and broken hearts; in more than one way, the two girls left in hurried dismay.
A month had gone and a word unspoken between the two old friends, laugher in every class from Liam and games being lost so regular, a new life began for Evie.
