As soon as I woke up and rolled over, I immediately felt a wave of soreness wash over my muscles. Last night when I worked out, it felt good at the time, but now I'm having some regrets. I presumed rolling out of my bunk and nearly hit the floor from barely being able to stand.
I picked out a typical pair of clothes including a pair of khaki shorts and a baby pink blouse. Then, I topped it off with my white converse.
Suddenly the red light above the door began flashing and a loud siren wailed throughout the entire place. I didn't know what else to do other than break out into a sprint until I got outside, and I think everyone else had the same idea. When I rounded the corner, Calum's eyes met mine and I knew mine were full of fear, his were just confusion. He began running until he caught up with me and we made our way to the cafeteria, through the garage, and out into the entrance. The vault door was wide open, so we ran straight through, finding the large group of people who were staying here.
Sam had a wide grin spread across his face.
"So? How'd you like your first drill?"I rolled my eyes, trying to not sound impressed, because at this point I'm really not. But, I guess we do have to be prepared, just incase something bad would ever happen. When I looked around for my family, there were at least three more families and probably even more that I didn't see.
I strode over to the first new family.
"Hi! I'm Carter Nelson, Tom's daughter."
"Hey Carter! I'm Spencer. This is Toby."
"Nice to meet you! When did you get here?"
"Last night. We're lucky we did. The radio station last night in the car said that there was a bombing in Washington DC, only three hours from here. That's why we had the drill.." Toby spoke. Him and Spencer made a nice couple. They both looked athletic and very educated, and they seemed in their higher twenties.
"Well I'm glad you got here alright. Hope to see you soon, maybe on kitchen duty or during gun safety class. See ya!" I said, quickly speeding away eager to meet Calum's new friends.
The next new person I met was a man. I fought the urge to run back into my room and crawl into my bunk, hiding away forever instead of having to go through and talk to all of these people I don't know. My parents always pushed me to be more outgoing instead of shy; and I always tried. It was just that feeling before you first talk to someone that makes me nervous and makes me want to hide from everyone.
I continued to fight the urge as I spoke to Mark. That was his name, I introduced myself, told him to have a good day and said I would see him around. He bid me goodbye and I walked even faster to the next people.
The next family was composed of an older lady, who had wrinkles on her face from what looked like years of worrying, and a small boy of who seemed to be around seven or eight years old. I wondered who would babysit the nights we have training.
The woman introduced herself as Ferra, and I told her I loved her name, and as it turned out, the boys name was Liam. He was actually ten, which was far from what I had guessed. Either way, they were both very sweet. Ferra appears as if she's gone through a lot, but I don't ask. Instead of rushing through my introductory conversation, I took my time because it was actually enjoyable talking to them. I hope that I get kitchen duty with Ferra, considering that I doubted she'd be included in gun training very often.
When I finally padded my way over to Calum, he was just standing by himself, hands in the pockets of his black shorts, and he was kicking around a little rock.
"Hey Cal!"
"Hiii Carter." He said. No, I'm not a mind reader, and I'm not even very good at telling what people are thinking, but Calum was obviously distressed about something.
"What's wrong?" I said, with concern over him not being his normal, hyper and flirty self.
"I-I don't even know. I hate it here. I want out!"
"Calum calm down. We're gonna be okay I promise. Promise me you'll stay strong so I can too."The loud beeping that meant the vault door was opening rang through my ears, so I told him we'd meet up later and made my way back to find Alison.
When it was dinner time, I volunteered to do kitchen duty to pass the time away. I'm not gonna lie, these past couple of days have been pretty depressing. However, I'd rather be bored and down here then scared for my life and back home. It was an okay reality, but I miss my house, my enormous bookshelf, and I even sorta miss school, and that means a lot.
When dinner was over and I finished up helping Ferra clean up, I began walking back to my room.
I turned the corner, and literally bumped my entire face into a hard body that smelled heavenly and was extremely muscular. It was extremely obvious who it was.
"Oh sorry." The Australian-born voice said.
"It's fine! I was just gonna look for you. Are you feeling any better?"
"I don't know. I'm sorry Carter I should be thankful that we're safe and I have you. I miss my friends though. And I miss playing music."
"What instrument do you play?"
"The bass. But I have an acoustic guitar too. That's what I brought here to this hell hole."
"Cool! You should play for me sometime. I want to hear you play."
He smiled, and I returned a small smile. The light seemed to return to his eyes and his face seemed to retake his normal color. My dad always said that someone who doesn't take pride in their passions, is never happy. However, someone who does can be happy and content within the worst situations. Calum obviously loves music and playing music. It shows in his appearance and everything. I envy him in this moment, that he has such a good outlet, but the moment passes when I remember about the books my mom brought me. I completely forgot that I have something to do!
I told Calum goodnight and that I'd see him tomorrow, and speed walked like an idiot back to my room.
"Hi Mom! Hi dad! Gotta read." I said, walking right past them from where they say on the couch, my mom knitting a blanket, and my dad reading the newspaper.
I wonder how long it will be before newspapers are a thing of the past.
Once I found where I had packed away my books, I chose one of my favorite books and dove into the story.
