A dead body was found. There were scratches, cuts, and severe injuries on the body. Blood was the only covering for the naked body. It was as if the killer toyed with her before killing her.
Busan was peaceful just a few days back, the criminal cases had gone down immensely and the cops, prosecutors and intelligence were having a good time. But as they say, good times never last long.
The most unsettling thing about this murder was that it was animalistic; the condition of the corpse screamed numerous stories of torture and violation. It was the most brutal murder Busan had witnessed in around a decade. And the girl was innocent, who could have such intense enmity with a university student?
The cops had secured and secluded the corpse from the common public; waiting for the prosecutors to arrive. The policemen felt disgusted by the crime, it was beyond comprehension.
“Let me see the body,” a man spoke authoritatively.
It was Mr. Cha, one of the intelligence agents. Mr. Park, the lead of the cops, was befuddled. He was sure the prosecution team had to come, then why was it the intelligence?
“Mr. Cha, I’m pretty sure you wouldn't have to deal with it unless it's a threat to the country. This is the prosecutors’ work.” Mr. Park’s voice was firm as he said that, his obvious dislike for Mr. Cha evident in his words.
“Mr. Park, I’m pretty sure that you know such murders are generally the work of serial killers, a one time killer wouldn't have the nerve to be so brutal,” he said mockingly as he made way towards the corpse. He shut his eyes in disgust immediately upon witnessing the sight. It was horrific.
“Did you guys get any lead on the case? Any clue, any evidence against the criminal?” Mr. Cha’s self-proclaimed superior demeanour came through when he said that. His disgust wasn't directed towards the criminal or crime, but towards the sight he had to witness.
“Do you think we were idle enough to search every spot in the grass? We have been trying to get the common public away from here since we came.” Mr. Park grew frustrated.
It was pretty obvious that nobody was dead serious about the matter. And that was the problem.
In this childish attempt to prove to each other that they were doing more work, no lead was found on the case. The intelligence agent Mr. Cha kept bragging that he could solve it with the right resources while the assigned prosecutor; Mr. Kang did nothing but roam around the city.
The murder grew more and more twisted, they found marks of glass thread on several parts of her body along with hunter marks. She was stabbed multiple times in different areas and her earlobes were cut. It was also confirmed that she had been raped before being killed.
Song Hye-in was a 19 year old university student who was registered as missing 2 days before her dead body was found. She had been kidnapped on her way home and that was the end of her story. The victim’s family was at a loss of tears, what could be more hurtful than losing a cherished one? Their pleads for detailed and effective investigation on her case were futile, neither the intelligence nor the prosecution did anything. And the police were told to remain out of the matter by higher ups.
After immense pressure from the family, Prosecutor Kang finally decided to be serious about the case. He spent day and night working to find evidence and clues.
He was getting some leads on the case, like finding the victim's belongings in a nearby building and studying the entire method of killing.
But his efforts went in vain when he was burned inside his car, vanishing along with all evidence he had collected.
And that warned the others about one thing, the killer was spying them.
Even though the killing method was different, it was obvious that Mr. Kang was murdered only because he was working on Hyein's case.
Now, the intelligence and the police were both on edge. How could they find the killer? Would they have to risk themselves? Almost all of the supposedly brave men took several steps back when it came to risking their own lives.
Mr. Cha most certainly didn't wish to sacrifice himself, nor did most of his team members.
Mr. Park, although selfless and willing, didn't have any chance to take measures on his own. His authority was limited as an inspector.
The news had already spread across the country and people were questioning the government. That's when Mr. Lee Jong-In had to step in. Mr. Lee had the authority over all three of these forces : Intelligence, Prosecution, Police.
Lee Jong-In called Cha Giho and an experienced and trusted prosecutor; Jeon Jungkook in his office to discuss the matters.
"Mr. Cha, I'm heavily disappointed regarding your lackluster efforts. I expel you from this case until further notice," Mr. Lee commanded, taking Giho by surprise.
"But sir-"
"No arguments."
With that, Cha Giho left the cabin.
"Now, Mr. Jeon, I know that you are on your much deserved break but I also know that none except you is capable of solving the worst of mysteries. This might sound superstitious, but I have an instinct that this case isn't a normal one." Mr. Lee's tone had changed as he started talking to Jungkook.
"Sir, my break can be delayed, but justice can't," Jungkook said with determination. He was the leader in almost every case he had been given since getting the job. He did his work flawlessly.
But will he be able to the find the flaws of the criminal?
"That's what I like the most about you, such a hardworking and principled man."
"Sir, I am straight," Jungkook said with the most serious expression on his face.
Soon enough, the two burst out laughing while looking at each other.
"Yah! You brat! You're my son's age," Mr. Lee jokingly scolded him while Jungkook faked an apologetic look.
After a while, Jungkook left from the office with a new case in his hands. A case that spoiled his break, a case that killed the previous prosecutor.
And a case that was simply a culmination of several other past cases.
