Isabela still stood in the living room nervously, she wasn't sure where to go and what bedroom she would use for her time their. In fact, she wasn't even sure if her cousin has enough bedrooms for them both. She decided to break the awkward silence and ask him. Before she could, his voice broke the silence.
"Um, so do you want to see your bedroom?" He asked her.
She nodded and so he stood up from the couch and gestured for her to follow him down the opposite hallway. On the left side there was three doors and on the right there was two. He stopped at the second door on the left. He opened the door and waited for her to go in. She set her one backpack down on the bed and turned around to face him, as she did her eyes widened and she gasped.
"What is it?" He asked her, concern was evident in his voice.
"My Tío is still downstairs waiting for me to grab my last bag!"
Juan Carlos started laughing and grabbed her wrist gently, "Let's
go!"
They took the elevator down the four stories to the ground floor and ran to the dusty beat up car that barely made the trip from her small town. Her Tío was sitting in the front seat restlessly chain smoking cheap cigarettes. He looked up at their arrival and narrowed his eyes to glare at the two happy young adults.
"About time you get back, what were you doing Isabelina?" He asked sharply using her full name.
Isabela's smile faded and she swallowed.
"I'm sorry, I was getting to know the place." She lowered her eyes to the ground an took on the appearance of a dutiful niece.
He rolled his eyes, "Whatever, grab your stuff so I can go. Where is my Anita?"
At the mention of his girlfriend Juan Carlos sobered and stepped forward to answer him, "She is in the US señor."
Anita's father frowned at this and glanced at his deceased sisters daughter. "Be sure to keep your hands off of my niece and stay faithful to my daughter, hmm?"
Juan Carlos flinched and only managed to nod at this. By this time, Isabela had grabbed all of her stuff and was waiting to say goodbye to the only relative in the vicinity.
"Adios tío, have a safe trip." She smiled and looked genuinely happy.
Her uncle only replied with a, "Yeah I will. Keep your hands off of my Anita's boyfriend." With he pulled away into the traffic of the city to head home to the village.
Isabela still looked visibly shaken from her Uncles words and could only turn to Juan Carlos in disbelief. He nodded and led her back up to the apartment. In her mind Isabela promised she wouldn't fall for him.
