The old house at the end of the street lay abandoned like it had been for many years, its windows cracked and blackened by the flames which had burnt away at its insides. Many people had their beliefs surrounding the old house, most of them involving a ghost or people who went in and never came back out.

Drew sauntered down the road with her head down, not really paying attention to where she was going, while her friends followed behind her and chatted idly about boys and nail polish. A sudden chill ran through the air as the sky clouded over. Drew stopped and looked up at the sky a cool drop of water fell on her face.

”That was sudden” she muttered “the forecast didn’t say anything about rain today “Her friend stopped next to her.

“What’s wrong?”Marie asked. Drew looked at her “nothing, I just think it’s going t-“but she never got to finish her sentence, a torrent of rain came down soaking them all to the bone in an instant.

Drew started to run looking around for anywhere she could go to get out of the rain, reluctantly she headed towards the old abandoned house that she knew wasn’t too far away, despite the fact that she’d been warned not to go near the building.

Drew ran through the space where the door would’ve been and shivered when a freezing cold draft of wind blew through the building, she sighed wrung some of the water out of her hair trying to forget her surroundings and the feeling that she shouldn’t be there.

“Who are you?”A voice said

She turned and saw no one, her heart hammered in her chest and her pulse quickened. Closing her eyes she took a calming breath and let her hair fall back into place, although it was frizzier than before.

“I’m over here “the voice said

She spun towards the direction of the voice, and stepped away from the boy sitting on the charred floorboards who was looking at her, curiosity evident on his face.

“What are you doing in here?” he asked while he stuffed his hands into the pockets of his jacket.

She stared at him”uuh, I-I’m trying to keep out of the rain” she stammered and turned to look through the empty doorframe to where the rain was still pouring. She mentally slapped herself.

‘What are you so afraid of?’ she thought to herself

“What are you afraid of?” he asked sounding rather amused.

“Who said I was afraid of anything?”She asked as she tried her best to keep the fear from her voice. She shivered as another draft of wind blew through the house.

“You did…” he replied

Drew watched the rain pour her sense of dread growing every second and then as if sensing her discomfort it began to rain harder and harder until she could no longer see a few feet from the door. Reluctantly she sat on the floor and pulled her legs towards her in a futile attempt to stay warm, painfully aware of the fact that the boy was watching her.

“Doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon” The boy said, mostly to himself.

She silently agreed, the few minutes that she had been looking through the doorframe the rain had not let up one bit and remained as dull and gray as it had been a few minutes before.

Drew shivered again as another cold breeze blew through the space.

“They all died here” he said suddenly. There was no emotion in his voice

“There was a gas leak you see “he studied her face watching for her reaction “Then the father walked in with his ‘superior’ intellect and decided to have a smoke then…boom” he made an indication as if using a lighter.

“That’s horrible “she said softly without looking at him

“Depends on how you look at it”

“Well” she said looking outside at the pouring rain but not really wanting to stay in the house any longer “I’ll be going now”

He turned away from her as if suddenly finding something interesting about the burnt black wall.

She glanced at him “You should probably leave as well” she said “before you die of pneumonia”

Slowly he turned his head to look at her, his head cocked to one side

“I can’t let that happen, can I?” he smiled. A smile, she noticed, that didn’t reach his eyes and left them as cold and lifeless as the house itself.

”I’ve already died once I don’t want to experience it again” he chuckled darkly as smoke began to swirl around him until it had engulfed him completely, and then it was gone, and he was gone with it.

Drew stared at the place where they boy had been sitting, slowly backing out of the house, her heart hammering and her eyes wide with fear. She turned and ran, sprinting away from the house as fast as she could no longer caring about the rain only wanting to get as far away from the house as possible
