like any other october 31st scarlett sat at her dining table her cheeks burning red as everybody stood around recording and singing, she prayed on everything that the soft glow of the candle light and the dulled kitchen light stopped the harsh pink tint from showing.
her tight lipped smile turned into a grin hearing her friends sing louder "happy birthday dear lottie!" she knew just from the nickname it was the bleached blonde boy. she shook her head lightly at malachi as the song came to a end.
birthdays were never her thing and birthday wishes most definitely weren't, every year she wished for the same thing, from her mom and dad to finally be home for atleast one of her birthdays or atleast even the same state. so for the past two years to save herself from the small heartbreak she gave her wish to her little sister sophia.
"okay make a wish" scarlett spoke softly into her sisters ear wrapping her arms around her waist as she wiggled on her lap.
sophia's eyes clamped shut for a second or two before she opened them again and blowing on the flame. "yeahh" everyone cheered clapping loudly.
as the group watching the sisters scattered off into the conway house scarlett's phone dinged.
she reached into her pocket reading the notification.
