Pov Sage

"I'm sorry but he is in a very critical condition at the moment. Normally we cannot make this prediction yet. We normally don't get this information until later. We can already say that he has a 5% chance of surviving this. We would therefore like to ask you whether you would prefer that he be put to sleep?" the doctor tells me sympathetically.

Nooooo!!!

The tears immediately roll down my cheeks again.

"Is there still some uncertainty in that 5% chance? That maybe it could be more?" Anna asks.

"No. It really is a certain and weak 5%," the doctor says regretfully again.

I collapse on the ground. Tears are streaming down my cheeks like crazy.

"Is he in a lot of pain?" Anna asks.

"Yes, that's why we're keeping him in a coma right now," the doctor says.

I look up to Anna.

Tears roll down her cheeks.

"Then I would like him to be put to sleep. I don't want him to suffer any more than he already is," she cries.

"I understand ma'am. I will pass it on to my colleagues," says the doctor.

"What!" I shout across the hospital.

5% may be very little, but as a mother, don't even give him that chance!

"Anna! How can you say that? It's your son. He does have a 5% chance. It is 5 whole percents. No galve. And I...I love," I rattle off.

Anna grabs my shoulders.

"Sage now he is in so much pain. I don't want to do that to him. I can't do that as a mother either," she sobs.

"You love him?" she asks in surprise.

I nod cautiously as more tears appear on my cheeks.

"Oh dear. I'm so terribly sorry. I have to do this. For Meri. You will of course get a normal farewell," she says.

I nod softly in my crying fit.

"Come with me. I know which room he is in," she tells me.

She grabs my wrist and pulls me into a long hallway. The hallway where the nurse didn't let me go when they were going to operate on Meri. I check again to make sure there is no one who can catch us. Everyone is busy or looking in a different direction. The coast is clear, I sob to myself.

Anna checks the nameplates. All doctors enter a room and things are wheeled in. That must be Meri's room! I wriggle free from Anna's grasp and run towards the room.

I open the door with quite a noise.

"Young lady you shouldn't be here at all!" a doctor warns me.

"Just leave her alone. It was her boyfriend," I hear Anna say.

The doctors nod briefly.

I immediately crawl into bed next to Meri. I put his arm around my waist.

"Meri," I sob.

"I'm so sorry I didn't tell you until so late. I'm sorry I didn't listen to you when you warned me about Dylan and now you're the victim. I should be lying there. Not you," I sob. I can tell right from his nose that Anna is crying. All the doctors look at me sympathetically.

"You have to know that I love you okay. To the moon and back and much more then just that," I whisper in his ear.

I grab his hand.

"Remember that movie we watched?" I ask.

"Stupid question. We watched so many. Remember that one movie? I think it was called The Choice. When his wife was in the hospital, you told him not to act like that and that I was crying while hiding under a purple blanket on my bed? A soft chuckle escapes my mouth.

"That's how we are now," I sob again.

A high-pitched scream comes from my mouth. If I scream, something is really wrong. I don't just scream.

I felt a pinch. Very soft in my hand.

"Meri! He squeezed my hand!!" I shout loudly.

The doctors walk over in disbelief. We are immediately sent out of the room.

Anna looks at me in surprise. I'll stay in his room. Until they tell you how he is.

After about half an hour the door opens again.

A doctor stands in the doorway.

I jump up and nod.

"He's awake. We ran some tests and as it stands he survived. He asked about you," he smiles.

I storm past him into the room. Behind me I can just see Anna collapse on the ground from joy.

Meri knippert zwak een paar keer. Hij ziet mij en glimlacht lichtjes. Ik ga naast hem op de rand van het bed zitten.

Just when I want to tell him my whole story again, he stops me.

"Sage. I've heard it. I love you too. It's over with Bertha. I love you and I have done so all these years," he says smiling, after which he coughs a few times.

A doctor looks at Meri warningly. He probably won't be allowed to talk. I know another way to make my emotions clear. I think Meri has the same idea as me in my head. I gesture for me to come and grin slightly at me.

I sit next to him on the bed and press my lips to his.

Meri pulls away.

"Sage, just a repeat of our meeting," he says, grinning.

"Do you really want to be my girlfriend now?" he asks?

"I wouldn't have it any other way," I smile and press my lips to his again.
