In an empty room, Kai is sitting down with a smile on his face.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): Being evil is basically easy to do, because I always thought that I can be just as good when being a bad guy. I don't prepare myself when I'm about to become this character, I am the character, just turned all the way from 1 to 100.
Footage shows Hosako smiling and laughing as he has a hold on a random opponent as the opponent screams in pain.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): It's that whenever I see my opponent in the ring before I go out there, I figure out many ways I can come up with to inflict as much pain as possible. And when you look into my eyes, you know that I love inflicting pain on anyone who faces me. I love it, and I won't stop until the day I die.
~Intro Plays~
Footage of Hosako cutting a promo plays while smiling...
Kai(subtitles): You think I'm gonna stay in the back and let you chant that stupid catchphrase with these pathetic people and their snot-nosed little brats?
The crowd boos as loud as they can and that tells Ren that he's touched a nerve on them, letting him know that they now wanna see Matt Riddle kick his ass, and it's working.
Kai(subtitles): Your little games are over when I'm around because I'm looking to murder you.
Narrator: Ren Hosako, "The Broken Winged Angel", is the personification of what the final boss in wrestling should be. Arrogant, cocky, sadistic, and most importantly, evil. Ren Hosako took the world by storm with his athleticism and technical ability along with a smile that can easily intimidate anyone who crosses him.
Footage of Kai in NJPW's Suzuki-Gun cuts a promo backstage with a rye evil smile.
Kai(subtitles): If you think for a second, that I'm gonna take whatever bullshit that's coming out the hole you call a mouth, you're more wrong than the booking I've gotten in New Japan.
Masami/Io Shirai(subtitles): Kai is one of those wrestlers who can be very vicious and just absolutely unstoppable in the ring, but when you give him a microphone, get ready for whatever he's gonna say, because he will abuse you like a father does in Detroit.
Kaori/Kairi Sane(subtitles): Kai was nicknamed the "Broken Winged Angel" because of who he is outside of the ring: sweet, kind, and very beautiful as a person. Many of the women in Stardom have described Kai as that, but inside the ring, he's just as evil as he can be.
Minoru/Minoru Suzuki(subtitles): Kai as a wrestler can be an asshole, and that's what made it easy to boo him. Well, I can be too, but he does it better than I can. *laughs*
Narrator: So how did Ren Hosako become the "Broken Winged Angel"?
Kai/Ren(subtitles): I think I was born the "Broken Winged Angel", much to the horror of my parents. I was born in Yamaguchi, Japan, September 23, 1988. Growing up, I didn't have a good childhood, and the reason was that kids were always bullying me and I had trouble learning in school because of that. So my sister and parents, who were so down to earth, they took me to the doctor and got me checked out. My IQ score was 105, but the diagnosis came back and it was revealed that I'm on the Autism Spectrum.
Kaori/Kairi Sane(subtitles): When it was revealed that Kai was on the Spectrum, it didn't make me feel any less differently, because he was and still is one of the sweetest people I've ever known. He's very smart and he knows what he wants to do, but at the time, that was why he was looked at differently from other people.
Narrator: In the mid nineties, Kaori and Kai Hosako would switch to different channels, but one company would be brought up: New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): New Japan Pro Wrestling was the first company I've watched, way before I watched WWE and my parents were a bit stimulated by it, but it was always on TV. Whenever it came on, I ask Kaori if she would watch it with me, and the answer was always "yes". We started watching Tiger Mask, Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Antonio Inoki, and a man who was my idol and who would train me full time, the wrestling King himself, Minoru Suzuki. He always had this aura around him that was so evil, sadistic, but more than that, he was cool, and that's all he was whenever he wrestled. I always watched the technical guys because they made it look so easy and very effective to their work, so I thought, "I wanna do this. I wanna become a professional wrestler".
Kaori/Kairi Sane(subtitles): When Kai said he wanted to be a wrestler, I supported him because I knew he could do it, not to mention that whenever he wanted to try a move, I would be the Guinea Pig!
Kai/Ren(subtitles): I would practice the moves on Kaori, but I never hurt her where I would break a bone or whatever because she wanted to try wrestling, too. However, when I told my parents that I wanted to become a professional wrestler, they were like, "Yeah, that's nice, honey. How about you be a doctor instead?" I was like, "How can I be a doctor when I have an athletic background?" We would go back and forth on the whole thing, but they soon supported my career aspirations. We moved to Tokyo to be near the New Japan dojo because at the same time, we saw that Hiroshi Tanahashi, the "Ace" of New Japan Pro Wrestling, was being the head trainer of the dojo, so it gave me an opportunity to show what I can do.
Narrator: In 2006, Kai was a far cry from being the "Broken Winged Angel", but a certain "King" would challenge him to a sparring match, and become a big influence on his career.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): Minoru wanted to test me and see how I did after I performed one of his moves, so, I was like, "Let's go". Big mistake. He would perform his signature chops and just made me feel so much pain on my chest to where it started to turn red, and it hurt. Like, I'm not gonna lie and say that it didn't.
Narrator: In the end, Minoru was the one who came out the victor, but he showed respect to the aspiring young wrestler.
Minoru/Minrou Suzuki(subtitles): I thought Kai was mocking me at first, but after getting to know him and how he wanted to be a wrestler, I knew he was special, so I took it upon myself to train him. Kai had a very good idea on technical wrestling, but the moves he had done were slightly off. That didn't mean he was bad, I thought he needed some help, and I was more than happy to do it. When he told me about this autism, I felt compelled by his work ethic. Listen, I didn't know what Autism is and I still don't, but how Kai managed to put in the work and not feel insecure about himself is just inspiring.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): I thought I was in my element because wrestling always gave me a way out of the real world from all the bullying and the hard times I've had at school, so having the opportunity to train with Minoru and being in the ring to make it? It was a blessing, it really was.
Narrator: In 2007, Kai would make his pro wrestling debut in the UK, but it was the first time he would start to feel homesick.
Kai/Ren(subtitles): The reason I started in the UK is because as a Young Lion for New Japan, you are required to wrestle in different countries before coming back to Japan, to get an idea on how each style of wrestling worked. I went to London, Blackpool, Birmingham, all over England, even Germany, but I was booed out of the country because of the history. I traveled to Mexico, where I had the honor of getting to know the culture and how Lucha Libre worked, but then again, I was being a babyface. To me, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a babyface, as long as there's a reason to be fighting for the fans, but in Mexico, I was the foreign heel, and remember, this was around the time when Japanese wrestlers were seen differently. Little did I know, I was giving them a glimpse of the future "Broken Winged Angel" persona.
