Down at G.U.N. headquarters, in an office within a building where Rouge and Shadow sat while Abraham Tower provided them with a simple enough job to end their day and shift.
Shadow took a sip of his coffee as he looked around the office, taking in his surroundings. The sun was beginning to set outside the window, casting an orange glow across the room. —He couldn't help but feel somewhat... dissatisfied with this assignment. It wasn't challenging enough for him; it didn't test his abilities or push him beyond his limits.
"This is all fine and dandy," Shadow muttered under his breath, "But where's the real action? Where are the missions that will truly put my skills to the test?" He glanced over at Rouge who appeared equally bored and disinterested in their current situation.
She seemed content just sipping her tea and reading through some magazines she found laying around.
"Mostly everything has been back in place, Sonic has already taken care of the Eggman case just a week ago. But I suspect he'll come back around. For now, there's nothing too severe that require any Chaos abilities." With a setting of the perfect amount of files he now had in his hands, he began to adjust his disastrous paperwork that were scattered all around his desk. Rouge looked up with a sight of disinterest till she realized that she'd have to settle in for the job without protesting anyway.
"Let's get this over with." Gently placing her mug of tea and with a bit of sass lightly tossing her set of magazines on Tower's desk to create more of a mess to clean. As she stood up, she waited for Shadow to go along as well.
—Sighing deeply, Shadow stood up and followed Rouge towards the door. They made their way out of the office, heading down a long, sterile hallway filled with other G.U.N. personnel bustling around with their various duties. Eventually, they reached a large steel elevator that took them down several levels beneath the surface, where G.U.N.'s main computer network was housed. Once they arrived, Rouge and Shadow split off, assigned their respective tasks by a gruff technician.
For the next hour or so, Shadow scanned through various monitors, checking data streams and running diagnostics on the servers. Meanwhile, Rouge searched through countless drawers filled with files and paperwork, cross-referencing information and organizing everything in neat piles. Though they both tried to keep themselves busy with their assigned chores, it didn't take long before their restless natures started to grate on each other.
Suddenly, Rouge spun around and caught Shadow smirking at her, clearly enjoying the fact that she was becoming more frustrated with each passing momentRouge rolled her eyes to ignore the look Shadow sent her way, even if Shadow was enjoying this, there wasn't much he could do either— they were both bored.
"Let's just ditch this place, we're never gonna find anything here." She found herself complain, tossing the file she had on her hand to the ground. Having no clue on what those papers even contained. Shadow was talking but she wasn't listening, her eyes drifted down at the papers she threw which was scattered on the stone floor. Rouge notice a few odd wording that caught her attention, 'Lab... experimenting... people' this was new. She had never heard of a laboratory anywhere at G.U.N. Headquarters. She squatted down to pick up the papers, a smug smile formed on her lips.
"Hey, handsome, what do ya say we check out this secret laboratory?"
Shadow watched as Rouge tossed aside the files she'd been looking through, her disinterest evident in every movement. He couldn't blame her; this assignment was incredibly dull compared to their usual missions. —As she spoke up about a secret laboratory, however, his interest was piqued.
"A laboratory you say?" Shadow said with a raised eyebrow, glancing over at the papers scattered on the floor. "I'm game if you are." With that, he stepped forward and began to gather up the papers, reading through them quickly to see what information they contained.
