i was in there for no less than an hour. the tears just weren't stopping. i was having one of those days but i couldn't just lay in bed and rot, i had to go back out and be okay. i sat with my head in my hands on the edge of Mr and Mrs Weasley's bed, taking unsteady breaths. i doubted a house like this had Aspirin or something for my pounding head, so i was gonna have to suck it up.

i was by no means done crying, this had one hurt. but i've been gone for too long, i was gonna be questioned too much if i were to stay as long as i wished to.

being a prefect felt stupid because it had been a goal Cedric and i had set together. he died not knowing i ever achieved my half of the goal.

i take a deep breath and stand up. i look in the dirty mirror in their room and saw my swollen and bloodshot eyes. i lean against the dusty dresser and stare at my badge in my palm. i was waiting for my face to go back to normal.

after a few minutes i see my swelling and redness went down and i looked presentable. i fiddle with my hair a little and practice smiling in the mirror. i most definitely looked insane.

i shoved my badge in my pocket, walk out the room and back to my own, fully not expecting everyone to still be there.

"y/n? where the hell were you??" Ron inquires skeptically as i walk in. i blanked. i opened my mouth to reply with probably the most bullshit answer when Ginny suddenly entered and interjected with, "she was helping me with something."

i felt her hand slide into my own that were behind my back and squeeze it. had she heard me crying?

"ah alright... well Mum's gone to Diagon Alley to buy all our things... she said i could get a new broomstick cause i became a prefect!" Ron exclaims excitedly. Hermione was sitting and scribbling a letter to send to her parents about the good news. Fred and George were talking softly amongst themselves and Harry was sitting and packing his suitcase in silence.

nobody was paying attention to me anymore so i turned to Ginny and whispered graciously, "thank you."

she smiled softly and nodded. "i'd heard you but Mum said not to bother you right before she left... if you need someone to talk to i'm here y/n."

i appreciated Mrs Weasley respecting my privacy more than she would probably be able to comprehend. i smile softly back at Ginny and bring her in for a hug.

we broke the hug and i walked back over to my bed to continue with my packing. Harry was sitting on the edge of it as he was folding up his robes. he leaned over and said, "y/n? uh, well done and congrats by the way."

i smile awkwardly. those words would've sounded a thousand times better coming from Cedric. "thanks Harry, and sorry about not getting it... you deserved it."

he waved his hand dismissively. "nah it's fine, don't worry about it."

judging by his expression, it most definitely was not fine. but i didn't pry.

Mrs. Weasley arrived back from Diagon Alley at around 6 o' clock, laden with books and carrying a long package wrapped in thick brown paper that Ron took from her with a moan of longing. we'd all just finished packing.

"never mind unwrapping it now, people are arriving for dinner, I want you all downstairs." she said, but the moment she was out of sight Ron ripped off the paper in a frenzy and examined every inch of his new broom, an ecstatic expression on his face.

down in the basement, Mrs Weasley had hung a scarlet banner over the heavily laden dinner table, which read:

CONGRATULATIONS
RON, Y/N AND HERMIONE
