Background information:

My name is y/n y/ln. I'm a pogue from outer banks, but unlike the others, I have never had a rivalry with the kooks. My dad used to work for Ward Cameron.

One day when I was maybe 5, Ward had a cookout and invited my father and I because he was good friends with my dad. I wore a hello kitty sundress, and it had rained the day before so I was playing in the mud.

All of the other girls were drinking tea, wearing dresses that probably costed hundreds of dollars. They thought I was weird, but I didn't really care. Then, a boy came over to me.

"Hey" he called to me. I looked up at him, a bit confused. "Hey" I said back. "Can I join?" He asked. I nodded my head at him. He came over and played with me in the mud.

Unlike me, he was wearing good clothes. A nice polo tee shirt that wouldn't be good dirty. "Rafe!" I heard someone scream. Me and the little boy looked up to see Ward Cameron standing over us.

"What do you think you're doing?" Ward called. "I'm making a mud pie!" Rafe told him. "You're getting yourself all dirty, get out of there now." Ward yelled.

"But dad-" Rafe got cut off by his father. "Up. Now." Ward called for the last time. Rafe looked at me with sad eyes, I felt bad because he didn't want to be all fancy, he just wanted to have fun.

"Sorry" Rafe said as his dad dragged him out. I understood why Ward wouldn't want Rafe to be playing in the mud, but a part of me was sad that day too.

Me and Rafe have a 3 year age gap. At that time, I was in kindergarten and he was in 3rd grade. A few months later Rafe was turning 9 and Ward and Rose through him a huge party. They invited the whole elementary school.

When the date arrived my father drove me to Tannyhill. I was so excited because it was rainy out so I hoped Rafe would play In the mud with me again. That did not happen.

I went into there yard and ran to Rafe. "Happy Birthday!" I called holding his gift. "Thanks!" He replied. All of the sudden Ward came over and took my dad to the side.

At first I was confused but I didn't mind it. "Look, there's mud! Wanna play in it?" Rafe asked me. "Yeah!" I told him. "There will be no playing in the mud" Ward told us.

"Hey uh y/n. We have to go now. Why don't you give Rafe his gift and then come to the car." My dad said to me. "What? I wanna play with Rafe!" I cried. "I know you do but we have to go now alright?" My dad responded.

"Why can't she stay" Rafe asked my father. "Sorry bud, we're busy" he told him. "Oh..." Rafe said sadly. "Bye Rafe" I told him.

I gave Rafe his gift and left. That is when I found out I liked Rafe. Ever since then whenever I saw Rafe we would always try to talk, but it was like his parents would never approve. When his parents weren't around, I was too embarrassed to talk to him.

It's been 10 years and I miss him. I'm still waiting for the day we make a mud pie together.
