In a booth, on New Year's Eve sat Dean, Sam, and Castiel in some local bar. Dean had insisted that all three of them needed to go out for the celebration. Sam knew Dean didn't care about New Year's in the slightest, he was there for one reason only, to get lucky. And for some reason he decided to drag him and Castiel along.
Dean looked at the time, and smiled, "Five minutes to go, time to scope out my options. I suggest you two do the same thing."
Sam rolled his eyes and took a shot that Dean had pushed towards him earlier. After Dean was out of view, Sam grabbed his stuff and got out of the booth. Unaware of the angelic eyes on him, following close behind.
He had heard a few people talking about him in there, hoping to get lucky, which was nice and all, but not what Sam wanted at all. It was best to leave now before anyone got any ideas, he stepped out of the bar, prepared to go in the car for the time being. Until he opened the door and it stayed open a little too long, he turned around to see Cas.
Sam scrunched up his face, looking down, he gets on Dean all the time for forgetting about Castiel and he had done it himself. He had honestly expected the angel to leave ages ago or to have followed Dean, but he doesn't blame Cas for not wanting to be around Dean right now, "Sorry, for kind of ditching you," Sam said.
"I just needed to get some fresh air."
Castiel nodded, walking to stand next to Sam, "The bar is not your scene like Dean's," looking away towards the bar where you could hear laughter and cheers pouring out, "I prefer being out here as well."
Sam smiled at Castiel who turned back towards him, "Yeah, it's never been my thing," Sam said, "Especially on holidays, I'd rather stay away."
Castiel tilted their head, "You don't like celebrating?" They questioned, and Sam shrugged.
"Not really, not up for the theatrics." Sam said, and looked up, hoping to see some stars, but the lights drowned them out.
"I had hoped to participate this year," Castiel said, Sam looked back down surprised.
He started walking back towards the bar, "Do you want to go back in?" Sam asked, "I'm sure you could find someone -"
"Not with a stranger," Castiel interrupted, "I had someone in mind."
Sam stopped midtracks and frowned, "Like Dean?" He asked, and Castiel shook their head.
"No, someone closer than him." Castiel said, and Sam's eyes widened. "But it's quite alright that this night doesn't end with that, I know it's not your thing." Castiel said with a small smile.
Sam cleared his throat, finding his mouth suddenly dry, "I... Um, I wasn't aware."
The angel laughed lightly, "I suppose my hints weren't obvious like I had thought."
Sam thought about Castiel sitting close by to Sam. All night the angel had been next to him, and had asked about the nights customs, confirming it does end with a kiss into the new year, but asking Sam that, not Dean. And now is definitely aware of Castiel's oddness had been the angel's flirting which he had told himself wasn't possible.
"I don't think that was the problem," Sam said, rubbing the back of his neck, "I was just really dense."
Castiel shrugged, "No matter, even if you caught on sooner, it wouldn't have changed anything."
Sam could hear people getting ready for the countdown, he walked up to the angel who raised an eyebrow as Sam tilted Castiel's face up, "Sam?"
"I..." Sam looked Castiel in the eyes, "I don't want to miss my chance."
In the background they could hear a loud "Ten!" shouted, and Castiel understood, and listened closely as, "Nine!" was shouted.
"Eight!" Castiel stepped closer, not breaking eye contact as they listened to, "Seven!"
Sam mouthing the next number to he shouted, "Six!" his heart beating incredibly fast, nearly out of his chest as the number, "Five!" passed all too quickly and equally as slowly.
"Four!" On went the crowd, it dragged on longer for Castiel who could feel the beats within each second, "Three!" and yet, they'd wait an eternity if it meant they could kiss Sam at the end of it.
"Two!" The crowd got louder, and they began to tilt their heads, noses pressed against each other as they waited for the, "One!"
Their lips met, smiles forming as they kissed, more than happy to follow one New Year's tradition.
