It had grown dark, a shiver ran down my spine as I looked through my binoculars that had thermal energy attachments to it. I was scanning over the forest that lay behind the base, seeing birds and other animals roaming but no sign of any life which was a good thing.
I sighed and wrapped my blanket around my shoulders trying to keep the heat in my body. I opened up my flask and took at a sip from it, I saw Ghost eyeing it up. Without saying anything I passed it too him, to which he took it with eager hands. I always came prepared for over night watches I learnt that a long time ago. He passed it back to me with a thanks.
I carried on scanning the forest until I saw three figures off in the distance.
'3, north east, 500 yards out.' I said to Ghost.
He took my thermal camera and started sending off signals to me, helping me line up my sniper. I looked through the scope finger poised and ready to shoot when given the command.
'Split off. Take shot now.'
I took the shot and got one down. The other two started running towards the base, it was hard keeping up with them.
'One running south east, 200 yards. Now.'
I took the shot and took him down as well.
'I can't find the other one switch with me.' Ghost said already laying down ready to line up to the sniper. I took the thermal gun, scanning the forest. I was stood over Ghost not really caring about my current position, I was purely focused on finding the person.
I carried on scanning until I picked them up on the camera.
'50 yards out. North east.' I followed them with my camera watching them as the closed in on the base before watching them crumple to the floor. I smiled down at Ghost, knowing that he had to be perfect with that shot. He looked back up at me eyes shining in the moonlight. I realised my position and quickly moved, not wanting to make it awkward.
I slid down the wall and sat down my head resting against the wall, I could feel myself getting more and more tired by the minute. I closed my eyes enjoying the silence I could barely hear my down breath. I noticed a warmth next to me, Ghost had sat down next too me and threw the blanket over both of us. He smoothed it down tilting his head slightly looking at the pattern.
'What is it?' He broke the silence not for the first time that night.
'It's the outline of my mum, dad, Soap and I. Soap got me it after our parents died.' I said smiling slightly. It was a dark background with the silhouette of us four in different colours dotted around. My dad was blue, mum was yellow, I was green and Soap was orange. I loved this blanket more than anything.
'It's nice. I like the bond you and Soap have.'
'Do you not have any siblings?'
I watched as the shifted uncomfortably, and I suddenly became conscious that I had over stepped.
'I'm sorry. You don't have to answer' he turned to me and smiled.
'Thanks.' He looked away in thought. 'You know that night? Where I followed you outside and you told me about Amelia?'
I nodded in response, as much as I liked talking to him I also liked listening to him as well.
'And you thanked me for listening. That u didn't trust you, it liked you? Yet you appreciated what I did? I just wanted you to know that it meant a lot to me when you said that.'
I looked at him my eyes staring into his until I smiled softly at his words. I had become accustomed to his lack of knowledge about emotions and I thought it was just a little quirk. Yet here he was telling me that it meant a lot to him, I didn't know how to respond as I knew this was hard for him to say.
'It was just the truth. Does that mean you like me now' I said trying to lighten the mood. I nudged him a little with my elbow whilst laughing.
'You are...tolerable. Not as bad as Soap' he said with a small laugh. 'You know before you joined he used to talk about you all the time. He nearly exploded when he got the news about you having your own team.'
'That sounds like Johnny' I laughed 'you aren't to bad yourself Ghost.'
'Simon'
Ghost's POV
'Simon'
She looked at me confused.
'My name is Simon' it felt odd telling her that, but for the first time in a while a person had made me comfortable to be around. I met her eyes as she smiled at me. The most genuine smile, her teeth were not perfectly straight or stupidly white. Yet her smile was genuine and beautiful.
'Nice to meet you Simon. Paige MacTavish.' She said holding out her hand. I took it and shook it both of us laughing. I liked how she made me laugh in moments I normally wouldn't. I held her hand in my gloved one a little longer than I should've. I looked into her dark eyes trying to find something negative when she looked at me but there was nothing but happiness.
'I am 23 years old. Grew up in Scotland, before moving to England to join the military at the age of 18. I have an older brother called Johnny Mactavish. He is 26 years old. My favourite colour is dark forget green.'
'I am 29 years old. Grew up in England. I also joined the military at 18 years old and my favourite colour is yellow or black.'
She smiled at me, it was nice being comfortable like this around someone. It felt surreal. It was a different feeling than being friends with Soap. He was my best mate, yet with Paige it was different. We watched the sunrise together, her smile grew wider as the colours burnt through the sky. Her eyes once again returned to the golden brown returned. She was artwork, yet I would never care to admit that.
