Standing on the hilltop, Alex and Johan looked down into the valley blanketed in snow. What they saw was fascinating – a huge graveyard stretching out below. The morning sun made long shadows across the graves, making them look even bigger and kind of ghostly.
Alex shivered, and it wasn't just from the cold. "Wow, I can't believe this," she said quietly.
The graveyard was huge, filled with an almost unbelievable number of graves. They stayed there a bit longer, just staring. This place was probably a part of their town's hidden past, a mystery they were just starting to understand.
Then, Alex and Johan began to walk down the hill towards the graveyard. They were careful, as the snowy slope was pretty slippery. The graveyard seemed to get bigger and more real the closer they got. The quiet forest around them made everything feel more serious.
They came to some old, rusty barriers that were blocking the way. But they found places where they could get through, feeling more and more determined to find out what was going on. They felt nervous about what they might discover on the other side.
Walking among the graves, Alex and Johan started noticing something really odd about the dates on the tombstones. All of them had dates ending in 2031, and a lot were right after January 2nd.
Alex's voice was quiet. "This is what my mom was talking about. So many people gone on the same day." It felt even colder as they realized just how big this tragedy was.
Johan brushed snow off a gravestone to see the date better. "Check this out, Alex. It's like whatever happened, it hit everyone all at once."
Standing there, it hit them how huge this was. They were in the middle of a giant graveyard, a place marking a sudden, huge loss for Cedarwood Hollow.
"But what really caused this?" Alex wondered out loud. "No sign of a big explosion or anything. Look, the dates go up to July, and they're all buried here." So many graves, each one for someone whose life ended because of that event.
As they walked, they found a spot with pauper's grave, marked by a tall obelisk. It was really standing out in all the snow, a serious marker among all the other graves. The obelisk had hundreds of names on it, some just first names or even nicknames.
In the quiet of the graveyard, Alex and Johan understood how deep this tragedy was for their town.
Walking deeper into the graveyard, at the end of the road, Alex and Johan found a barrier. On it was a sign that really grabbed Alex's attention. It had a logo with a star and a lake, something she knew right away. It was her dad's emblem, "Vattenfall," which means "waterfall" in Swedish. It looked really weird to see it there, like it wasn't supposed to be there.
Under the picture, the sign said just two words: "Turn back!" Alex couldn't take her eyes off it. It was as if her father's voice echoed through those words, urging her to return home and steer clear of this cursed place.
Johan saw her face change. "Alex? What's wrong?"
She gave a slow nod, not looking away from the sign. "I know it sounds weird, but I think this is a message from my dad. Like he's saying we should turn back." Her voice was quiet, and she sounded really distraught.
They both felt like the sign was more than just a warning. It was like a line they weren't supposed to cross.
"Maybe we've already seen too much," said Johan.
Feeling down but knowing it was the right thing to do, they agreed to head back home to Cedarwood Hollow.
"Yeah, let's head back, Johan," Alex said, trying to sound strong even though she felt really upset. As they left the graveyard, they had even more questions that they couldn't answer yet..
Going back through the forest, Alex and Johan were startled by weird sounds around them. It sounded like howling in the distance, making them both really nervous. "Do you think those are wolves?" Alex asked, her voice shaking a bit.
Johan looked around, worried. "Could be. Let's move faster."
They started running, their hearts beating fast as they darted between the trees. The howling seemed to get louder, echoing around them. It felt like something was watching them, following them. They just wanted to get back to Cedarwood Hollow as quickly as possible.
The more they ran, the more scared they got. They hadn't eaten all day and only stopped for quick breaks. And then, they ran again.
As the daylight started to disappear, Alex and Johan finally got back to Cedarwood Hollow. They were exhausted but happy to be home. The town was still and quiet, but something felt off.
They saw people coming out of their houses, looking worried. It was clear everyone had been anxious about them. Neighbors came up to them, asking, "Where were you kids? We were so worried!" They could see the concern in everyone's eyes.
Alex and Johan looked at each other, realizing they might have caused a bigger stir than they thought. They didn't mean to scare anyone, but their adventure had really worried the town.
"We're fine, just really tired," Alex tried to explain, but she could tell they needed to say more. The neighbors' worried looks told them this was serious.
Then Alex saw her mom coming through the crowd, looking really upset and relieved at the same time. "Alexandra, where have you been?" her mom asked, her voice full of worry.
