CHAPTER 49
"MY GIRL"

[real life]

melina walks down the stairs, once she's on the final step, she sighs, debating on whether she should just let it go and go back upstairs to join matt. she looks up at the stairs for a moment, then groans, shaking her head.

"he's such an idiot!" melina exclaims, letting her arms fall to her sides as she walks down the hall toward nick's room. that's when marylou's voice stops her as she passes by the living room doorway. "alright, what did matt do this time?" marylou asks, turning the page of the book she's reading from her spot on the couch.

melina's shoes squeak loudly as she stops abruptly, realizing she wasn't as quiet as she thought. she shuts her eyes in annoyance for failing at being subtle and steps back, turning around to face marylou, who's still waiting for an answer. "how did you know it was me?" melina asks sheepishly, leaning against the doorframe.

marylou gives melina a gentle smile. "sweetie, you're not exactly as quiet as a mouse. plus, i heard you trip walking down the stairs and say some strong words." she laughs as melina's eyes widen in embarrassment. "sorry, i didn't know you were already home," she mutters, looking down.

marylou shakes her head, laughing softly, and pats the spot next to her on the couch. "so, what's wrong?" she asks, giving melina her full attention. melina hesitates, unsure if she should even involve marylou in the drama with matt.

melina looks around awkwardly before speaking up. "well... as you know, he doesn't really think before speaking, and he said something during our game that bothered me a little." she shrugs, trying to figure out how to explain the situation. she's also confused about it herself.

marylou lets out a quiet laugh. "sweetie, did you tell him that it bothered you?" she asks, giving melina a pointed look. melina tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, taking a deep breath. "not exactly," she replies sheepishly, fiddling with the lace of a pillow on the couch.

hearing herself say that, melina furrows her brows, realizing she could've just talked to matt instead of storming out like a child, but her pettiness had stopped her from doing so.

now she felt stupid.

before marylou can respond, they both hear loud, fast steps coming down the stairs. they watch matt walk past them, completely distracted, heading straight into the kitchen, unaware that melina and marylou are sitting on the couch.
