NIGHTTIME HAD ALWAYS BEEN WHEN ANDROMEDA FELT THE MOST PEACEFUL. like when she was at the archery range, she just felt like her thoughts were collected better out in the cool air of the night.

technically, the camp had a curfew. but andromeda never caused any trouble, so chiron looked the other way when he saw her sneaking out of the cabin to sit in the forest at night.

it reminded her of the times her dad would take her to central park to look at the stars. there weren't many that they could see with the new york city pollution, but he knew exactly where they were and told her all of the stories of orion, perseus and andromeda, and all the other myths. she was certain that he had no idea where the constellations were, but she just wanted to hear the stories over and over again.

out on the long island sound, she could see the constellations much clearer.

she laid down on her back, and just watched. the grass was soft between her fingers and the sky smelled like it was going to rain soon. crickets chirped in the distance, and she could hear the patter of little raccoon feet scampering about. but she wasn't scared — she was comforted.

all those sounds, sights and smells reminded her that she was just a girl in a giant world. sometimes everything seemed so wrong that she needed that reminder.

suddenly the hairs on the back of her neck stood, and she gripped the dagger luke had gifted her for her birthday that past year. she knew no monsters could come into the borders of camp, but she was so deep in the forest that no one with good intentions should have found her.

as she spun around, she came face to face with percy jackson, who seemed just as surprised to see her. "wow." he said. "this fate stuff is getting kind of scary, right?"

andromeda let out a breath, and patted the spot next to her. "come sit." she told the boy. "i'm sorry, for all the pressure today."

the boy chuckled. "nah, no worries." he said. "it'd be nice to find something i'm good at anyway."

the girl smiled. "we'll find it." she said, before she took notice of the little bag in his hand. "is that blue candy?" she asked him. "where did you even get that?"

percy smiled. "my mom gave it to me before she..." he trailed off, his smile faltering.

andromeda sighed. "i'm sorry." she told him. "i know that doesn't help. but it sucks."

percy nodded, looking up at her. "how do you know?"

andromeda sighed. "my dad's gone too."

TEN-YEAR-OLD ANDIE WAS OVER THE MOON. take your daughter to work day was one of her favorite days — not only did she get to skip school, but she got to go to the museum of natural history where her father worked as the planetarium director.

she held on tightly to her father's hand as they waited on the subway platform. "daddy, daddy!" the young girl exclaimed.

"what is it, bambi?" mikey lazaro answered, using the ever-so endearing nickname he called his daughter.

the young girl smiled up at him, a sort of mischievous glint in her eye. "are we going to see the dinosaur at your work?"

mikey chuckled down at his daughter, ruffling her hair. "sure thing." he answered.
