Chapter 1
“Come on just do it.”
“Ugh, do I have to?”
“Yes, now throw the gosh darn rock.” Said Clare.
“What if…” I was gonna come up with an excuse but she had interrupted me before I could.
“No, you’re not getting out of this”
“But Clare.” I whined, drawing out her name in exaggeration.
“Hey, you know what’s funny? Everyone has buts. Now throw it Lox.”
I looked up at the window out of the corner of my eye. It looked paper thin, and I had a good arm. I don’t want to have to pay for a new window when I already have to pay for the schools statue. Hey, it’s not my fault the statue was in the way of my car.
“Lox, just throw it.” Clare said.
“Why don’t you throw it?” I asked.
“Pffft, did you seriously ask that question? Lox, if I threw that rock I wouldn’t hit something, I’d hit someone.”
I thought about it and claimed it as true. I remember in fifth grade we were in gym and we had to throw softballs. When it was Clare’s turn she threw it and broke the nose of someone behind her.
Shaking out of my memory lane I focused on the rock. “Ok, fine. But you might not want to be under the window that’s a bad place.”
Clare stepped back and observed from the side. I wound up my arm and closed my eyes. I focused on the rock in my hand and where the window was. I took a deep breath and then, I threw. I heard a loud ‘thunk’ and opened my eyes. My friend Nick was standing at the window.
“Ok, Ok, I’m comin’, I’m comin’.” He said while he climbed down the ladder we had put under his window.
“Hey, there’s a thing called a party. It’s what normal people go to.” Said Clare.
Nick chuckled and said, “Who ever said we were normal?” I turned to him and gave him a high five. He was sorta’ true although. I mean I’m no normal human being. I’m half faerie half human. I know crazy right? Well let’s just say, Dad was faerie and Mom was human, they fell in love, had me, and Mom ditched. I guess she didn’t want a part in the magical realm. But I also knew that Nick was a warlock and the oldest one ever at that. He had taught me how to use my glamour and magic. Because if I went walking around with pointed ears, my bright blue hair and silver eyes I would be exactly called normal. Nick practically was my brother. My Dad was always in the Nevernever, I mean a king’s gotta do what kings gotta do.
“Okay, chop chop. We’re gonna be late.” Clare was herding me and Nick towards my jeep. I jumped into the front seat and scooted it up.
“Jeesh Clare. Why are your legs so long?” I asked
“I don’t know. Why are your legs so short?” She came back.
“Touché” I heard Nick chuckle in the back so I imagined a pointy hat and long white beard on him. I always teased him on how he should have a long beard and big pointy hat. When I turned around I bust out laughing. Nick was now tugging out his beard, well, at least trying to. Clare looked up from her mirror and said, “What’s so funny?” She started to turn around and before she did the beard and hat left in a puff of smoke.
“Nothing. Nothing at all. Ok let’s go!! Hey ho silver away!” I yelled and pushed on the gas pedal. As we were making our way towards the party Clare had started talking about some ‘game plan’ but I had just stared ahead and tuned it all out. Nick was in the back playing angry birds. I swear he is the most distracted warlock ever. I smirked as I thought of an evil plan. I concentrated on Nicks phone and then while his tower was about to fall I exited out of the game and locked his phone. His gaze snapped to meet mine in the mirror. I just smiled innocently and turned back to the road again.
We had pulled up to a house in the next couple minutes and it was trashed and thrumming with emotions. Hate, love, happiness, and most of all carelessness. I could taste all of them. My favorite was the love. It tasted sweet and sour at the same time. I had my eyes closed tasting all the emotions until Nick nudged me with his arm. “Hey, don’t get too carried away with the emotions. Wouldn’t want your Dad getting mad because he had to clean up a mess… Again.”
“Oh shush. I won’t get carried away. At least not very much.” Before Nick could say anymore I bounded off towards Clare who was standing, talking to a random guy I didn’t know. I snuck up behind Clare and crouched down. After about ten seconds I jumped up and slapped her shoulders
“Holy son of a monkey’s uncle!”
I raised my eyebrow and said, “Monkey’s uncle?”
“You caught me by surprise. You know me; I have a very colorful vocabulary”
“This is true.” I turned to the guy that she was talking to only to find he was having a very hard time holding in his laughter. I walked around Clare and sauntered up to him putting on my most serious face. His smile disappeared and he started to take a step back. Once I was about six inches away I put on a cheesy smile, put out my hand out and said, “Hi! I’m Lox and you are?”
The air he was holding in his lungs exhaled slowly and the side of his mouth quirked up. “Ace.” He held up his hand and shook mine. When his hand touched mine a bright light covered my eyes and then started fading into a different scene that I was in front of at first. The scene before me was a dark alley and at the end of it, there seemed to be a portal to the Nevernever. I walked closer trying to get a better look.It looked like two men arguing. Or maybe one was a woman with a masculine build because one has a very feminine walk. Maybe it was a gay man I don’t know and kind of didn’t care at the moment. What I did care about was what they were talking about. Once I got close enough to see a face I stopped. The face was Ace’s.
