Posy's sobs echoed in the quietude of her bedroom, the heavy air filled with sadness. Bea and Honeybelle huddled around her, offering silent support as they tried to console the distraught young girl.
"Posy, what happened? Why are you crying?" Bea worriedly asked, placing her arms around Posy.
Posy sniffled, wiping her face, "It's Mari, she ripped my dress during the performance and...she's always so mean to me. I don't understand why"
"Some people are just like that, Posy. It's not your fault. Mari's always been... tough...since she was just a toddler" Honeybelle softly spoke, offering a box of tissues.
Clenching her fists angrily, Bea swiftly stood up and starting heading for the door, "I've had enough of Mari's cruelty, I'm going to go give that girl a piece of my-"
"No, Bea, please, it'll just make things worse. There are so many guests here, and I don't want to create a scene" Posy sighed, shaking her head.
Honeybelle nodded in agreement, trying to calm Bea down. Just then, Odie and Evie entered the room, linking arms. As soon as they saw Posy in such a dishevelled state, their hearts dropped to their stomachs.
"Posy, what's wrong, honey? We heard you were upset" Odie inquired, sitting at the end of Posy's bed and holding her hand.
Evie walked over and hugged Posy, rocking slowly back and forth and gently stroking her hair, "Shh, hey, it's okay, we're here for you, sweetie"
"Thanks, guys" Posy whimpered, her eyes clearly puffy from crying.
Bea turned to Evie, still frustrated, "Evie, why does Mari hate everyone so much? Why does she have to be this way all the time? Can't she see what she's doing to our family?"
Evie took a deep breath before sinking into a nearby chair, "Mari has always been a tough cookie...When we were kids, before you guys came...Mari was the Isa of our family. She was just perfect. She was adorable, everyone loved her curly hair and her sweet personality. Mari was everyone's favourite, our mum loved us all but it was pretty clear who her favourite daughter was...Our roles in the public were set in stone: Isa was the angel, I was the goofball, and Mari was the kingdom's love. I mean, Mari wasn't always sweet, she threw tantrums...a lot. And she always got mad whenever I or Isa had mum's attention, it's why I've always been closer to dad...anyways, Mari loved being the centre of attention, she used to make these really cute poses for the cameras, Now, sharing the limelight with seven other sisters seems to bother her...I mean, Mari's just sixteen so...I guess it's pretty normal for her to act like this-"
"Normal? Well, that's no excuse for treating the rest of us like this, it's not fair- especially to Posy" Odie interrupted, folding her arms, "quite frankly, I'm tired of her making snide comments at me because of some meaningless beauty contest".
"And I'm tired of her always referring to me as irrelevant" Bea grumbled, "Mari's just evil, and you know it, Evie"
Evie found herself caught in a challenging emotional dilemma, torn between the opinions and feelings of her adoptive sisters and her biological little sister. She knew Odie, Bea and Posy were right, but she couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt she felt. Agreeing with them was like betraying Mari. Mari was a challenging teenager, but Mari was still her flesh and blood, her baby sister, and Evie felt a compelling desire to protect her.
