In an act of unforgivable rage, Mari began her destructive spree, burning down family photos that held memories of happier times. She was especially after the photos that contained pictures of any of the adopted girls. The flames mirrored the fury that had engulfed her, triggered by the mistreatment she had endured from Hawthorne. Overhearing the sound of cackling flames and shattered glass, Posy- with worry and concern- walked in to see Mari smiling sadistically at the photo frames which were melting in the fireplace. Emotion was completely drained from her rosy cheeks and brown eyes, leaving an unfamiliar, ruthless monster in her place.
"What... What are you doing?" Posy stammered, her voice trembling and her heart racing.
Mari callously smirked, "Just redecorating."
Posy noticed Mari's cold grin and glanced in terror at the trophy shelf, which was inches away from the fire. As a way of getting back at Posy for stealing the limelight she craved for, Mari seized Posy's cherished horse race trophy, and with a malicious glint in her eyes, she mercilessly hurled the symbol of Posy's triumph into the crackling flames. The metal trophy, once a testament to Posy's proudest moments, contorted as it succumbed to the fire's voracious appetite.
Posy, wide-eyed and devastated, watched helplessly as her most cherished possession was reduced to molten remnants before her eyes. The room echoed with the hiss and crackle of the trophy's demise, mirroring the shattering of Posy's pride and joy. The weight of her loss carved deep lines of sorrow across Posy's face, and she felt as if she would collapse at any second. She fell to her knees, endless tears streaming down her face.
"Mari! No! Why are you doing this?"
Mari, unmoved and devoid of remorse, observed the destruction she had wrought with a chilling detachment.
"Oh, Posy, don't be such a drama queen. It's just a dumb trophy, never meant anything."
Posy began to sob incessantly, tears flooding her vision, "Why are you so mean to me? I haven't done anything to you!"
Taking a step towards Posy, Mari's smile turned into a contorted scowl, "You just don't get it, do you, Posy? Stupid little thing. I can't stand you because ever since you came here, the only thing that my family do is fawn over you like you're some kind of princess, and I'm left in your shadow. It's always 'Posy this, Posy that,' as if I am invisible. In my own damn home!"
"But I never asked for that attention, or received any of it. I just want to be a part of the family." Posy murmured, her eyebrows raised in perplexity.
"Oh, please. You think you're so special because of that ridiculous horse race. Like winning a little third place trophy makes you a queen. Well, news flash, Posy, you're not. You're just an ugly distraction, taking away the love that should be rightfully mine."
At that moment, Bea had been eavesdropping on the conversation and couldn't bear to hold back her anger any longer.
"Mari, that's enough!" She shouted at Mari, helping Posy to her feet.
Mari ignored Bea and glared straight into Posy's eyes, grimacing at her tiny, frail physique and continued, "And don't even get me started on your so-called sisters - Beatrix, Odette, and those loathsome twins. Charity cases, the lot of you. My parents pretend to care, but deep down, they don't. They're just being polite, trying to make up for the fact that you're not even their real daughter. They love showing you guys off to all their friends, can't you see that?"
"Stop, Mari! This is going too far!" Bea scolded.
Mari, undeterred by the feelings of both Bea and Posy, decided to intimidate Posy even further by getting in her face, completely disregarding her personal boundaries. As if she was trying to provoke a reaction out of her, Mari gave Posy small shoves, each one getting more and more aggressive, trying to test the waters to see how far she could go by immaturely singing, her obnoxious voice getting louder and louder in Posy's ears. She knew she could get away with it.
"Vilaine salope...vilaine salope...vilaine salope..."
Posy was unable to bear it anymore. Unable to bear the torment and the bullying. A need to avenge herself rose through her veins as she thought of all the times Mari made her feel small, insecure and weak. She didn't want to feel that way anymore, and if no one else was able to put Mari in her place, she would.
Without even thinking, she raised her hand and gave Mari a hard slap. It was an immediate and shocking assault on Mari's senses, leaving her stunned.
"Stop it! I'm so freaking sick of you! How dare you treat me this way?!"
Posy was overkill. Not even Bea could hold her back. Like a savage dog let out of its cage, she lunged at Mari, tackling her to the ground. A slap turned into a punch, a punch became multiple punches, anywhere Posy could get her hands on. Mari was trying to fight Posy off by taking away her glasses and pulling at her hair- but it proved to be ineffective. A colossal argument erupted, the air thick with shouts, screams, hits, kicks, hair pulling, and the violent clash of bodies. Bea, feeling helpless and terrified, let out an ear-splitting screech, one which summoned the entire family- including Honeybelle- to rush at the scene.
Isa and Evie, driven by a desperate attempt to quell the turmoil, intervened to separate the warring sisters. Isa grabbed Mari and pulled her away, whilst Evie lifted Posy by her waist and struggled to separate her from Mari.
"What on earth is happening here?" Isa yelled, looking around frantically.
"Enough! Stop this at once! My goodness, what is the matter with both of you?!" Evie screamed.
The room became eerily quiet. The only thing that could be heard were the heavy breaths of Mari and Posy. Both were bruised, bleeding and red in the face, staring at each other with a mutual desire to go at each other's throats once more- hatred pouring out of their eyes. Queen Pandora stood at a corner, holding a shaken and traumatised Bea. King Augustine was pale in complete disbelief at the sight of his daughters having such a brutal fight. Odie was protecting the twins from harm, who were both softly crying from the horrifying sight.
"Evie...your arm..." Odie pointed to Evie, her eyes wide in shock.
Evie hesitantly turned to look at her arm and gasped. In the process of attempting to stop the fight, her arm suffered a bloody scratch, a testament to the intensity of the struggle. It was unclear whether it was Mari or Posy who had caused it.
The tense silence was broken by Mari. Because of her learned toxicity from Hawthorne, she flung constant profanities and curses at no one in particular and emitted a pungent scent of alcohol, a stark reflection of the influence she had succumbed to.
"Mariposa! What is this foul behaviour?! Stop yelling and tell us what's going on!" King Augustine scolded.
But Mari was hearing none of it. Instead, she pushed her father firmly away from her. The push was so harsh that the king almost fell to the floor.
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut the hell up! This is all because of you, because of all of you! Posy doesn't belong here, no matter what, she'll never be considered my sister, ever!"
Queen Pandora looked at Mari with beseeching eyes, "Mari, please, don't be that way...Posy is family-"
Mari scoffed, her face a twisted combination of evil satisfaction and disgust, "Oh please, if Posy is family, then explain this-"
Amidst the chaos, Mari, seemingly with a calculated motive, produced a peculiar piece of paper. The revelation hung in the air like an unspoken truth, a bombshell that threatened to detonate the already fragile bonds within the family.
