Chapter 1: Well That Wasn't Supposed To Happen
"Okay I'm sorry for bothering you..." I frowned as the fifth person walked pasted me, claiming they had no change to spare.
I walked back towards my 'house' or whatever you would call an alley in the back on a deli.
I guess I'm going to have to look threw the trash again, which I absolutely despised.
Knowing I am a skinny, 12 year old girl with straight, messy and dull dark red hair that grew way too long, and blue eyes that used to have a brilliant shine to them does not, I repeat NOT mean I fancy digging threw trash.
I mean who exactly would? You don't see people running up and down the streets screaming that they love being homeless and digging threw trash to survive.
Settling down in my cozy little box, please note the sarcasm, I tried to get comfy and fell asleep hungry for the second day in a row.
{Next Day}
I woke up shivering during the cold, winter morning. Helping myself get up, I proceeded to my usual spot where I begged for food.
As I sat down on the side of the curb, I put out my old, trashy soup can hoping someone would have a heart. I sat criss-cross-applesauce, and began to people watch.
I noticed a tall girl, with pin-straight blond hair, gray eyes and she was wearing an orange t-shirt. I giggled, covering my mouth with my hands. She reminded me of my favorite character from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, AnnaBeth.
Yes, I am a book nerd. When I was still in the orphanage, after many countless months of begging, they purchased me a library card. Whenever I was sad or getting bullied, I would come to the library and read. Reading would take me away from wherever I was at the moment, and I would get absorbed into the books and make me happy for a while.
But once I ran away, my card expired and I have yet figured out how to manage to get a new one. Dismissing that thought, I looked back at the 'Annabeth' girl.
She looked to happy and cheerful, and I started to get jealous. Why couldn't I be like that? I once was...
Slaking my head, clearing my head of those thoughts and placing them in my 'Don't Open' box in the back of my head.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mary, the lady who wonder the store with her husband, Joe. She was a potato of a lady, in her later years. She
had one of those old fashion aprons, all frilly and small.
I didn't understand why she wore one, considering the fact she owned a deli, not a bakery. She had short hair, which seemed to once be a strawberry blond but is now fading down to gray, like how a spring flower would fade in the early months of winter.
I saw her shaking her head, and I could not tell if it was out of sympathy, or disgust. Shaking it off and not letting it bother me, I continued to observe my surroundings.
I spotted another blonde lady, much like the other, but still very different. This lady did not seem as perky or full of life, but more serious. But who am I to judge? She had a black blazer on, with matching black suit pants. Also she had many diamond necklaces around her neck. Personally, I would rather have flowers in my hair then diamonds around me neck, but whatever.
She had blue eyes, but they did not seem as happy as the used to be once before. She was walking into Starbucks when I noticed her twisting her ring around her finger.
Maybe, she was having relationship problems and came here to get away from it all.
I glanced back at the lady at the deli, Mary, and I saw her walking toward me. She came in front of me and bent down. This was the first time I saw her up close, and I noticed how aged she was. She had deep wrinkles on her forehead and under her eyes, probably from worrying. Her breath smelt like mint, I figured out when she began to speak.
"Here you go you Amber, you ugly excuse for a child," She said as she dropped a broken rubber band in front of me. I looked at her in confusion, and she began speaking again.
"This rubber band is like you. Maybe it was once useful, but now it is broken and worthless. Nobody wants something broken, so they leave it. Throw it out. They ABANDONED it. Just. Like. Your. Parents. Did. To. You."
Her words sunk in, and at first I thought she was kidding. But then I realized the sad truth, she wasn't. She was exactly right. I was neglected. Nobody wanted me.
"Nobody could ever love you," she continued. "Why do you think they never give you any of the change in their pockets? You drive away all of my customers, you frighten them. Nobody wants a worthless orphan infront of their store. Nobody wants to shop where a worthless orphan sits."
I blinked, not understand where she was going with this.
"I've been patient, allowing you on my property. I thought one day the police would come and take you. But they never did. I can always tell them you stole from me, I mean who would they believe? An orphan on the streets or me?"
As she said the police, I started to hear sirens blaring. She didn't. She couldn't. Could she? I started to panic, and Mary got up off the ground, and walked back towards her store. As she was walking away, she looked over her shoulder and said,
"I hope they don't go easy on you."
And with that, she left me as the sound of sirens came closer...
