The lights went out and the students were told to get some rest. Travis laid on his back and stared at the bottom of the mattress above him. Something in the back of his mind wouldn't let him rest. The mattress wasn't the most comfortable thing ever but it wasn't awful. He could hear the clock on the wall ticking by the second but he couldn't fall asleep. He looked at the clock to see that it was 12:08am. Great. He wanted desperately to sleep but he just couldn't. Before he could think about what he was doing, a single word left his mouth.
"Sal?" he called out as he sat up. "Yeah?" Sal answered back. Their voices were quiet to not disturb the rest of the cabin but loud enough to clearly hear each other. "I just wanted to see if you were awake." Travis admits.
"Can't sleep?" Sal assumes.
"Mhm."
Silence. It's not a heavy tense silence like the one on the bus. It's comfortable. "Do you wanna hang out up here with me?" he asked. Travis was a bit surprised at the request but didn't turn it down. He climbed up the ladder with Trevor and sat across from Sal. He had his prosthetic on still which probably meant he hadn't been able to sleep either. Sal had Robbie in his arms when he started talking to Travis. "So, where did the name for Trevor come from?" he asked. Travis looked down at Trevor and replied. "Oh well I used to be really close with this girl when I was like five years old. We would hang out all the time before my mom died and one day she told me to name him Trevor cause it sounded like Travis." He explained. Sal giggled softly and hugged Robbie tighter.
"Who was your friend.?" Sal asked. Travis debated answering because he knew that it would raise a lot of questions. He eventually answered.
"Her name is Monica."
Sal had his mask on but Travis could still see the surprise in his eyes. "Why did you guys stop talking?" he asked. Travis told him the story. Well, they stopped talking for a lot of reasons but there were a few specifically. First off, Monica had been over a few times and her mother didn't quite like his father. Monica saw first hand what Travis's home looked like. It was plain and clean. It didn't look like people lived there. It looked like one of those model homes that people can tour. Second, Monica was a brave girl and was open about liking women from a very young age. She knew who she was very young and when they were both seven years old she never hid that from anybody. Travis's dad made sure that the two never spoke again. Sal was pretty shocked at the story but handled it well.
"No offence, but your dad sounds like a asshole." Sal said.
"None taken."
Sal held up Robbie to Travis. "Maybe Trevor and Robbie are forbidden lovers." He said in a dramatic voice that made Travis giggle. He held Trevor up and made him kiss Robbie. "I guess so." he laughed. And there they were. Sal and Travis playing their stuffed animals like five year olds. They sat at the top of their bed playing for about an hour before they both started to get sleepy. "We've got a big day tomorrow, we should rest." Sal said. Travis just nodded and climbed down from the top bunk.
"Night Travis." Sal whispered.
"Night Sally Face."
~~~~~~~~Time Skip~~~~~~
Travis was woken up by Julia running back and forth banging pots and pans together. Not the best thing to wake up to if you asked him. Travis rubbed his eyes and sat up.
"Wake up! It's 8:30, breakfast is at 9:00!" Julia hollered. He stood up and took out some clothes from his suitcase. He waited until it was his turn to change in the bathroom and thats when he saw it. Harlo holding the note. If Travis was known as homophobic, then we don't even know how to describe Harlo's pure hatred. He's done things ten times worse than Travis could ever even think of. Harlo ran over to Travis, laughing with the note in his hand.
"Hey Loverboy! Found this by your bed! I wonder what everyone would think if they found out that the pastors son was faggot!" he taunted. Travis's eyes went wide and he felt like he was going to die right then and there. He darted into the bathroom and slid down the wall. Tears stung his eyes and his breath quickened.
"Shit, shit, shit." he muttered. His sobs grew louder and his heart rate was concerning to say the least. "Come on Travis, get your shit together." he whispered to himself. He stood up and put on his clothes with shaky hands. Tears were still staining his cheeks and his heart was beating unbelievably fast. He wiped away his tears the best he could before walking out with shaking hands. Sal was next to go change and he looked at him with concern behind his bright blue eyes. He could tell something was wrong. Travis just went back to his bunk and stared that the mattress above him. His mind was still spiraling and his hands were shaking. Sal came out of the bathroom and sat on Travis's bunk. "What's wrong?" he asked. Travis just sat up and the words wouldn't come out of his mouth. "Travis, what happened? You just ran into the bathroom after Harlo started talking to you." Sal rubbed Travis's arm softly and it made Travis's heart melt. "You know how I told you that I like to write letters of just things I wish I could say?" Sal nodded in response. Travis started to explain what happened. "Well, the night before we left for the trip I wrote down a letter and I just couldn't handle reading it back. I just shoved it in my suitcase hoping it would disappear. I guess when I opened my suitcase it fell out and Harlo found it." His voice was shakier than he would've liked. Sal's eyes grew more concerned. "Is he gonna tell anybody?" he asked.
"I don't know. I hope not."
Sal held out his arms, inviting him into a hug. Travis hesitated but hugged him back. "Thank you Sally Face." Travis said quietly. "No problem. We should get ready to go to breakfast. Sit my me and my friends today." he suggested. The idea made Travis a bit nervous but it was better than sitting alone.
"Okay." he agreed.
