"Ow! Careful now!" Elvis warned, staring up at his son who had thrown a beach ball in his direction
"Come on, dad. You can nap later." James said and sprinted down to the shoreline, kicking up sand behind him
Elvis stayed put where he was laying on a multicolored striped towel with Julia right at his side. They were both working on getting tanned or at least for a little while
"Dad! You said you'd help us make sandcastles!" Olivia called out from where she was sitting just but a few feet away with her little sister, pails and flimsy plastic shovels ready
"Why can't you let your old man rest today?" He sighed
"Because you can rest when we get home." Rose giggled
Elvis turned over to look at his wife, gently rubbing at her stomach and leaning down to kiss her lips a few times. "I'll be back, let me know if you two need anything." He murmured
"I'm fine, go ahead and make sandcastles." She poked him on the chest
Elvis finally made an effort to get up and walked down to the shoreline where his kids were waiting impatiently. He grabbed a plastic pail and small shovel, filling the bucket with sand though the cheap shovel broke in two when the bucket was almost full so he had to use his hands. James gathered some sea shells by the water while his sisters helped their dad by filling up their pail as well. Elvis plopped down on the beach and got to work on make a sandcastle as he flipped the bucket over and tapped at all the sides to make sure it was all packed down and wouldn't crumble apart, slowly lifting up the pink pail and smiling triumphantly at seeing it stay shape
The girls sandcastle crumbled just a little bit at the top but still stayed together. James returned shortly after with a small hoard of assorted sea shells and used them to make the sandcastles pop
"Why don't we add a moat?" Olivia suggested
"A moat? Our castles aren't that fancy, honey." Elvis shook his head with a small laugh
"What's wrong with adding a moat? I think it would look nice." Julia called out from where she had been watching their family, carefully sitting up and getting to her feet
"Mom knows best!" James immediately got to work on digging a little trench around the two sandcastles to where it would be deep enough to add some water
Rose had gone down to the water to fill some of the sea water into her pail though she got too close to the crashing waves and got knocked over, Elvis standing up and rushing over to his youngest daughter at hearing her cries when the water crept back into the tide
"You ok, sweetheart? Or did it just scare you?" He kissed her salty cheek after hoisting her up
"It was scary, papa." Rose clung onto him and hid her face in the crook of his neck out of embarrassment
"I'm sure it was. Did you get your water though?" Elvis walked back over to Olivia and James, carefully setting Rose down. She looked in the pail and saw she got just a small amount of water at the bottom of the bucket
She dumped it into the trench her brother had made though it didn't fill up much. "I ruined it..."
"No you didn't. It looks good." Julia had walked over to admire her family's creations
Elvis checked the time on his watch to see it was getting late and they'd have to start heading home. "Alright you beach bums, let's go home. You all need a bath too, I bet you're covered in sand." He said, the kids grumbling in unison. They'd spend all day at the beach if they could
The Presley's gathered up their belongings before heading to where the black rolls Royce was parked, putting the items in the back of the trunk before piling into the vehicle and going back to Elvis' hill crest house. He turned on the radio during the drive home and rolled down the windows for the kids if they needed to cool off
Once they got back, Elvis unloaded the car while the kids rushed inside though almost knocked over their mother in the process. He left the items outside in the backyard for now and went into the house. The kids took turns with taking a bath or shower and stayed up for a little while before it was time for bed, at least for the youngsters. Elvis had tucked in James for the night and went to Rose's room to do the same though the six year old demanded that he read her a bedtime story
"Not tonight, daddy's tired. I can do it tomorrow." He promised however she wasn't satisfied with that answer
"I want a story!" She pouted
Elvis thought to himself for a moment, smiling when he got an idea. "How about a song instead?" He compromised, Rose curiously tilting her head
She watched the middle aged man take a deep breath to calm his nerves, closing his deep set eyes for a quick second. Olivia was walking down the hallway to her room when she heard her dad, creeping towards her little sisters room and taking a peek inside
"Oh we sailed the sea seeking mountains of gold and fountains of youth from the stories of old, escaped from the perils and monsters below but after it all we had nothing to show." Elvis had grabbed a hat off of his daughter's toy chest and placed it on his head and placed one leg on her bed as if acting like a captain sailing a ship, turning away to pretend fight a hideous monster and sitting on the carpet floor after in defeat
Rose was enjoying the little tune and show her dad was putting on, finding it hard to stay awake at her eyes feeling heavy
Just as he started to sing another verse, he saw Rose was out like a light and carefully tucked his princess in, kissing her delicate forehead
"Goodnight, I love you." He whispered, straightening up and leaving the room after turning off the lamp on her nightstand
He nearly had a heart attack at seeing Olivia standing out in the hallway and being the nosy person that she could be. "You spoil her too much." Olivia smiled up at him
"Hey I've spoiled you over the years. It's in my description of being a dad." Elvis chuckled
"Night dad, love you." Olivia hugged her old man before going to her room
"Love you too, have a good day at work tomorrow if I don't see you in the morning." He returned her hug and watched her fade from view
Elvis had gone to his bedroom and joined his wife in their bed, sighing at the instant relief he felt the minute he laid down on the mattress. It didn't take long for his relaxation to end when he felt Julia lightly shaking him by the shoulder closest to her. "Satnin, I think we need to go to the hospital." She tried to stay calm though it was evident she was nervous
With that, Elvis leapt up out of the bed and helped Julia get up. He grabbed some of her clothes from the closet and anything else she might need before walking with her downstairs, running to the kitchen for a second to grab his car keys and scribbling a note for the kids on a piece of paper he left on the counter, leading his wife outside on the driveway to his light blue Chrysler Imperial
