My earliest memories began in Tokyo. It has been five years. Five years since I've been in my hometown. Five years since my father remarried.
Mother decided to move to America, New York precisely, after she got divorced. My grandparents lived there and mother thought it would be better if we went somewhere else for a change. I don't dislike living in America for the last five years, it was quite nice actually. I made a lot of friends from a volleyball team I joined since my first year of Junior High. I was very close with my team members and we even made it to nationals. Sadly, my grandfather got really sick during my first year of high school and he soon passed away. A year later, my grandmother passed away too. Mother didn't have a job that paid enough and she knew we wouldn't be able to support ourselves if we stayed in New York. I had to say goodbye to my beloved team and mother had no choice but to sell my grandparents' house.
During the flight, I couldn't help but worry. I worried about how awful it might be starting a new school in the middle of the school year. I worried if I'll be able to fit in since I've been living in another country for so long. I couldn't help but wonder if he'll be there, if he'll still remember me, because I do, I always do.

I try to keep up with mother's pace as I pull tight on my luggage and my tighten my grip on my duffel bag. We just landed a few minutes ago and mother is already rushing out to take the cab. The cold wind hits my face the moment we step out.
"Kiyoko! This way!" I hear mother's urgent voice through the wind and made it to the car through the snow. We load our bags in the trunk and mother took the passenger seat.
"Elm Street, Arcadia Avenue, please," mother told the driver. That's our old address, that's where we used to live, that's where father used to live too.
The car slowly moved away from the airport and into the empty streets. With the snow hitting the windows, and the soft classical music playing from the radio, I slowly drift to sleep.

Our house is very far away from the middle of town so I wasn't surprised to see the car still on the road when I woke up.
Damn, this cab driver is getting a lot today, I thought to myself, noticing the triple digits on the screen.
We pass by neighboring houses, looking at the people getting out for work and school. I was distracted by a group of teenagers on the side of the road, laughing and walking down the street in their school uniforms when I noticed we passed a particular house.
The blue brick house at the front of the block, with a small cherry blossom tree in the yard. This is the house I went to every year for Christmas, the same house I went to everyday after school, and the same house I go to that particular day of every year to celebrate his birthday.
I sigh as I turn back and stare at road until it stops after a few turns.

I took another nap after I loaded my clothes in my closet. Everything was a bit dusty but I managed to find some clean sheets in a drawer and spread it over my bed. Good thing my parents got me a double bed towards the middle of elementary school or I'll be napping on a very uncomfortable, tiny, single bed.
