As they set on the 20-minute drive to their new apartment, Mia and Fei began questioning whether or not they were capable of fending for themselves."It's best that you moved out of your parent's house," Mia's voice emitted confidence but her fingers gripped the steering wheel anxiously. "We're learning how to be independent!"
"Yeah, we are. Can you pull over though?" Fei clutched her stomach as she leaned forward.
"Everything okay?"
"I-" Fei gagged, "I'm about to-"
"No!" Mia slammed her foot down on the brakes and steered the car over to the shoulder. "Get out!"

The minutes ticked by slowly. Only 10 minutes remained till they reached their destination. Mia snuck glances at Fei, occasionally reaching her hand over to the car radio and skipping any sad songs that came across her playlist.
We'll be fine. I know a thing or two about living on my own. Mia thought. Either way, I can always call my mom.
"Hey, we didn't visit any of our neighbors beforehand," Fei brought Mia out of her thoughts.
"For what?"
"What do you mean, it's common courtesy to introduce yourself to the neighbors whenever you move in."
"Fei, we've been back and forth like crazy moving furniture. We can bake something for them tomorrow."
Fei sighed and stared out the window.
"Whatever, if they hate us, it's your fault."
"They'll be fine."

The 5 minutes left in their drive made the air all the more suffocating. Both wanted to fill the silence with a joke of some sort to ease their nerves but neither could find the right words.
Fei was deep in thought and in her fifth scenario already. In the future, she and Mia have made new friends in the neighborhood and are hosting a dinner party at their apartment. While Fei finished up all the cooking, Mia would greet everyone as they arrived. The living room would fill with compliments on the aroma of vegetables and chicken. Though it was raining outside nobody arrived sullen. She would glance over her shoulder and see everyone laughing at the silly party decorations Mia set up. When she looks back at the stove, her hand erupts into flames and the fire alarm would alert everyone of the present danger. The fire would spread to the whole kitchen.
Fei snapped out of her daydream and placed her hand on her temple.
What the hell was all that? She thought.
-
They were in awe as they drove up to the shiny black gates guarding Niles Manor. Mia leaned over to the keypad and punched in the code. Within a few seconds, the gates opened.
"Our first night in the new apartment," Mia exclaimed. She placed her hand on Fei's shoulder and smiled. "I'm glad we're doing this."
Fei took a deep breath in and nodded. "Terrified still but yes."
"I'll take it."
