MIDDLE SCHOOL
📍 TORONTO

"DIN AND JULIE, CUT IT OUT  IMMEDIATELY!" The instructor yelled. This wasn't her first time breaking the two up from an argument today. It wasn't even the first time in the last hour. The children never liked each other, from the day they both started pre-k. Julie learned her ABCs faster than Din, which made him upset. He learned addition before she did, which made her upset. Since then, the two had always seemed to have it out for each other.

Today they weren't arguing over the ABC though. As they got older, their disputes became more serious and frequent. Today, Din asked out one of Julie's friends, Amanda. Amanda turned down Din and told him that maybe if his forehead weren't the size of the earth itself, maybe she would date him.

This wasn't the first time Din had heard that exact joke (that he didn't find funny in the slightest), as a matter of fact, Julie said those same words to him the week prior. He usually wore hats, but one day during a disagreement, Julie snatched it off of him and saw the size of his head. It honestly wasn't that horrible, but Julie had found something to poke fun at him about. Now he was upset with her because he knew she probably told Amanda he had a big head.

"It's not my fault Amanda thinks you look so weird!" Julie argued. She didn't feel like hearing Dins' mouth today, or any other day for that matter.

"That's it!" Their teacher shouted. "Both of you will stay after school for detention today!"

Julie and Din's hearts sank. Both of their families did not play that.

Rather than blaming themselves, they blamed each other.

AFTER SCHOOL

JULIE SLOWLY MADE HER WAY TO THE DETENTION CLASSROOM. It was actually just the guidance counselor's office, who made it very obvious that he didn't get paid enough to be there.

As she entered, Din was already there. "Suck up..." She thought. She was around six minutes early, so god knows how long he'd been in there for.

The counselor had his head down at his desk and snored lightly. They'd have to deal with this for a whole half hour, which to the middle schoolers, felt like a lifetime.

Julie noticed Din had something under his desk, and so she curiously sat next to him. He glanced at her for a second and then looked back down at whatever he was busying himself with.

"What's that?" She asked. He glanced at her again and ignored her. She leaned over the desk and finally saw what he had.
"A Rubix cube? How long have you been trying to solve that for?"

Din sighed and finally turned to look at the girl, before setting the puzzle on his desk. "Why are you speaking to me?" He wondered aloud. It came out harsh, but he genuinely was curious.

"We're both gonna be stuck in here, might as well pretend like we like each other." Julie stated.

He thought for a moment.

"I guess so." He finally decided. "What do you even do other than make my life shitty?"

"Woah." She started. "Din Muktar swears? You learn something new every day." She realized in this moment she didn't know anything about him. "I really just watch TV, and play video games sometimes—"

"You play video games?" He asked.

"...Yeah?" She declared, sounding more like a question than anything.

"I guess we actually have something in common then," he admitted. His friends often jokingly called him a nerd for playing video games, so finding someone who shared this interest with him felt amazing.

The two discussed their favorite games for the half-hour, which flew by faster than they expected to.

"Hey...uhm, I'll see you tomorrow Julie?" He awkwardly said to her. This was the longest time they'd spent together alone, and also the longest time they hadn't come for each other's necks.

"Yeah, I'll talk to you then Din." She decided. Maybe he wasn't all so bad.

"Explain to me why I had to come pick you up from that school today?" Julie's foster mother angrily yelled. She knew she didn't have a good reason, and she knew that her "mother" would punish her severely.

Then, she remembered why she had detention that day in the first place, Din. All the bonding from the past day vanished in thin air, and all the hatred came back. She knew it wasn't reasonable. Din didn't know her home life, but she didn't want him to either.

She wished he'd just disappear.
