I dove into my eggs, and immediately appreciated the extra spices that Ferra and I added this morning to, (no pun intended) spice things up.

After having eggs at breakfast for more that a week straight, they tasted pretty bland. I was sick of them. Everyone was sick of them. However, no one complained. Ferra and I felt bad for not having anything else to serve in the mornings, but it was honest to goodness all that we had to give. The raiders desperately needed to go on a run already. With more people coming in, we needed more food. Still, we don't know what it's like outside, it could be a lot worse. So we dealt with the eggs. And we had been experimenting for the past few days with various spices.

"So what was with you last night?" Calum questioned, holding up a fork of eggs to his mouth but speaking first.

Alison broke her curious gaze from Calum and included me in her stare, all while wrinkling her eyebrows, asking "Yeah, Carter. What was with you last night?"

"Well, I remembered that I brought books and that I've been bored since we got here, so when I remembered I had something to do, I thought I was going to explode with excitement."

"Well okay then, you nerd." He replied. Shoving yet another fork-full of eggs into his mouth and shrugging after I gave him a look that said "shut up!"

"Carter's always been a nerd. By the way." Kyle added, sitting down at our usual table beside Calum and across from Alison and I.

I looked up at him, my mouth full of the very much improved eggs, and rolled my eyes. I could have given him 'the finger' but whenever I fought back with him, it only made things worse.

Calum laughed, along with Alison. Kyle just sat there looking high and mighty, proud to have gotten in a good insult this early in the morning. I just rolled my eyes again. Immature brats.

"Ali?"

"What, Carter?"

"Promise to be best friends forever?"

"Promise. Sisters by chance, best friends by choice! Even though you're weird!" She said, throwing the last water balloon at me and finishing off our water war.

I scrunched my eyebrows, giving her a mean look, but immediately gave up when she broke out into a laugh and put her arms around me. We giggled and ran to get our towels from inside.

"Emily! You can't just go off and spend all of our money on your little trips!" My dad yelled. Oh no.

"They're fighting again!" I whispered to Alison, who seemed upset already.

"Tom. I'm pregnant."

"What?! That's not possible!"

"I am. I was at the doctors this morning."

"Wow. Okay. We can handle that." He said, embracing her with a large 'forgive me' hug.

Who would have known that she'd miscarriage two months later, or that my parents would temporarily split up, only to get back together and have another wedding to renew their vows.

My siblings and I had a pretty strange childhood, but we grew up to be even stronger.

I was shaken from my memory by Calum.

"Earth to Carter?" He said, laughing.

"I told you." Alison said, fitting in a laugh before getting up to take her plate to the kitchen.

"I don't know what she said. But I'm not as weird as she says I swear."

"Yes you are. No I'm kidding Carter! You're adorable."

I laughed, feeling a blush seep into my cheeks turning them a bright red color.
