Have a wonderful day/night!
The day started out as normal as it could get, there was snow outside that was perfect for making forts and snowmen. There were even shortened classes today, and things were looking up for a group of young heroes who were trying to make it through their math class.
"It's that easy." Their teacher was saying.
Kamala looked over at her fire friend Dante, who looked back and gave her a thumbs-up before returning his attention to the assignment. Although, he looked distracted. Kamala couldn't help but notice; the two were practically siblings, that's why she was concerned...right?
Thankfully class ended soon, the assignment was so easy everyone got it done before the bell rang. As students left the classroom Kamala saw Dante had somehow fallen asleep on the table. She gently shook his shoulder.
"Dante." She said, nudging him gently.
"Huh?" he asked as he blinked awake, he sniffed before saying, "Hey Kamala."
"Are you okay?" she asked, he never fell asleep in class before.
"Yeah," he yawned, "Just tired from, gym yesterday."
"Gotcha." Kamala shot him a finger gun with a wink, "So you ready to go?"
"Where?"
"Home." Kamala explained, "The bell's going to ring."
"Oh!" Dante said, now realizing what happened, "When was this due again?"
"Today."
"Shoot!" Dante began scrambling to get it done.
"Slow down, you can finish it later, Let's meet up with America and Doreen, then you can worry about it."
"Ok." He quickly put the paper in his backpack and swung it over his shoulder.
He stood up, then immediately sat back down. Kamala gave him a puzzled look he smiled sheepishly, "Stood up too fast."
"I get it." Kamala said, she really did, her head rushes in the mornings were no joke.
The bell rang, "Well, time to head home."
"Let's go."
~~~~~~~~
"SG!" Kamala exclaimed once she and Dante made it to the secret base beneath America's garage.
"Kamala!" Doreen greeted back as the two friends embraced.
"School was so boring."
"It's a waste of time if you ask me." America commented, snacking on a sandwich in the kitchen.
"Yeah, same." Gwen said as she swung into the room.
"It's not too bad." Dante commented with a shrug, he set his bag down by the couch and got out his math homework.
"What's up with that?" Gwen asked.
"He didn't finish it in class." Kamala explained.
Gwen chuckled, "He never has homework."
Kamala realized what she said was true, but she asked, "Where's Daisy and Rayshaun?"
"Secret mission stuff." Doreen said like it was no big deal, "Should be back in a few hours."
"Got it." Kamala said, but her eyes drifted towards Dante, who looked like he was struggling with his homework. She walked over as Doreen and Gwen got distracted talking, America went back to work.
"What one are you stuck on?" she asked.
"Um 1." Dante said he looked a bit pale, but Kamala didn't think very much of it.
"Oh, that's an easy one you take the exponents." She explained while showing Dante on her own paper, "And you just add them together like... that!"
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"Thanks."
"You want me to keep showing you or do you think you got it?"
"I think I got it." Dante said, but his tone was uneasy, like he wasn't as sure as he seemed to be.
"Let's see you try the next few problems and if you got it down, I'll leave you to it."
"Ok."
After a few minutes of trying to focus Dante sighed and said, "I can't focus, everything's jumbled together."
Kamala was about to say something, but Dante suddenly set everything down and sneezed into his elbow. Surprisingly, that activated his fire powers as both his arms ignited, almost burning his homework in the process. They stopped burning when he sneezed a second time.
He sniffed and chuckled nervously, "Sorry about that."
He tried to get back to his homework when Kamala gently grabbed his arm and said, "Dante."
He looked at her concerned face as she said, "Are you feeling, ok?"
"Yeah." Dante said back, trying to look surer than he sounded.
"I'm not so sure you are." Doreen said, coming over she had changed into her Squirrel Girl costume at some point during Kamala and Dante's conversation, it was her favorite outfit after all and she loved her tail, "Your arms lit on FIRE. When you SNEEZED. How can you just say that's nothing?"
"Technically I didn't say it was nothing." He said, the concerned looks he was getting didn't help with his slowly increasing anxiety.
He looked at Kamala and said, "I'm just fine Stretch."
He tried to give her a reassuring smile, but her surprisingly stern face convinced him to tell the truth.
He sighed, putting his head in his hand to avoid eye contact.
"I'm not actually fine." He said in a defeated tone, "I've just been a bit off my game today is all."
Doreen and Kamala shared a look, then nodded.
"We get it, It's probably just stress." Kamala said comfortingly.
"And the fact that we're at the mercy of raging hormones." Doreen added.
'Not the time Doreen.' Kamala mouthed.
'What?' Doreen mouthed back a bit defiantly, 'It's true.'
"I'm going to head to my room," Dante said, standing up, "Maybe I'll manage to get my homework finished there."
After he closed his door Doreen leaned over and asked Kamala, right in her face, "We're going to keep our eyes peeled right?"
"For sure." Kamala said back, there was no way she was going to stay and watch from the sidelines, her gut told her something more was going on.
