Claire was a senior flight attendant now, the queen bee of the cabin crew, and with that came the responsibility of looking after the younger girls. Tomorrow, she'd be working first class on the London to New York route with two of them: Hannah and Hayley. Claire couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension.
Hannah was a recent college graduate who had become a flight attendant purely for the travel opportunities. She was always taking selfies in her uniform or posting pictures of her adventures on social media. Claire found her lack of professionalism irritating, but she knew that Hannah was eager to learn and could be molded into a good attendant with some guidance.
Hayley, on the other hand, was an experienced flight attendant who had married a wealthy man she had met while serving him on a flight. She often flaunted her newfound wealth with expensive jewelry and designer clothing. Claire didn't approve of her flashy lifestyle, and found that Hayley thought some tasks on board were beneath her.
As they gathered in the crew lounge before their flight, Claire decided to lay down the ground rules. She explained that they would need to work together as a team, and that each of them had a role to play. Hannah would be in charge of the galley, making sure that everything was clean and stocked. Hayley would be responsible for the first-class passengers, ensuring that their every need was met. And Claire would oversee the entire operation, keeping an eye on both of them.
Things didn't start well on the flight. Hannah was distracted by a celebrity on board and paid no attention to the tasks she had been assigned. Hayley refused to empty the trash, insisting that she was too senior for such a task.
Claire had to step in and take charge, reminding them both of their responsibilities. She made it clear that she expected their behavior to improve, or there would be consequences.
As the flight progressed, Claire watched over Hannah and Hayley like a hawk. Hannah seemed to snap out of her celebrity-struck daze but continued to pay little attention to detail and served several passengers the wrong meal. Hayley, on the other hand, continued to push back against Claire's authority, and even became rude to a couple of passengers who asked for refills of their drinks.
Claire knew she had to take action. When they landed in New York, she pulled both of them aside. "I'm disappointed in both of you," she said, trying to keep her voice calm and level. "Today's performance was unacceptable. I'm going to have to report your behavior to the captain, and I'll need you to write up a report on what happened as well."
Hannah and Hayley exchanged worried glances. They knew that getting a report from the captain could be the kiss of death for their careers. "I'm sorry, Claire," Hannah stammered. "I'll do better next time. Please don't report me."
Hayley, on the other hand, tried to play it off. "Look, Claire, You don't need to report me. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again." Claire studied her for a moment, weighing her words carefully. She had always been impressed with Hayley's confidence, but she didn't want that confidence to cross over into arrogance.
Finally, Claire made her decision. "Fine. I'll give you a choice. If you don't want to be reported, we can deal with this privately here in New York." She paused, meeting each of their eyes in turn. "I'm sure you've heard about how this type of situation was dealt with back in the day?"
Hannah and Hayley exchanged another nervous glance. They both knew what Claire was referring to. In the past, senior flight attendants would take new recruits under their wing, mentoring them and helping them learn the ropes. But, when they stepped out of line, their seniors were authorised to discipline them with the short, sharp shock of a spanking."
Hannah swallowed hard. She had heard stories about this practice, but she had always thought it was just an urban legend. She glanced down at her uniform, wondering if she should say anything. "I-I don't know..." she stammered. "I've never... done anything like that before."
