×BLAKE×
Santino let out a string of colorful slurs when Enzo brought me into his study.
"I told you we needed to keep an eye on Danny!" Enzo snapped.
"I thought he knew better than this!"
I was lying on a black leather sofa, my leg spewing blood around me, while the two of them argued.
From what I could understand, Danny was supposed to punish me for trying to escape. But he wasn't supposed to cause harm that would require medical attention.
I lifted a hand, "Uh, can we put the arguing on hold for a second," I motioned to my leg, "Intense pain and blood loss over here."
"She needs stitches." Enzo gave Santino a pointed look.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, "This is becoming a burden already. Maybe we should just get rid of her."
Get rid of me?
Enzo shook his head, "No. We can use her."
I wanted to point out that they did not need me.
Jordan wouldn't pay them just because they had me as their hostage. I was an orphan who owned a bar. I was of no use to them at all.
The only reason I didn't point it out was because I didn't want to end up dead.
Santino walked over and shoved his glass at me, "Drink," he turned to Enzo, "Get the car."
As Enzo hurried from the room I was sure I had seen a triumphant smile on his face.
"Drink," Santino repeated.
Normally, I would have thrown it at him. But I was in pain and desperate for anything that would numb it slightly, so I downed the neat whiskey.
"Don't try anything funny at the hospital. We own this town, and that includes the law enforcement."
My heart sunk to the pit of my stomach at his words. My plan seemed to have failed before it even began.
Santino scooped me up and carried me out to the car, much to my dismay.
On the way to the hospital I listened on to their conversation, it was clear that this wasn't the first time something like this had happened.
Enzo kept saying that Santino should have known better than to leave me to Danny to deal with. When we arrived we were ushered into a hospital room without any questions, this was my first indication that the De Luca's really did run the city.
The nurse didn't even ask Enzo and Santino to leave, nor did she ask me what happened.
"You need to take the pants off." She said.
I looked over at the two men in the room, "Some privacy would be nice."
Santino shook his head, "No."
I glared at him. Enzo had the decency to look away while I undressed, but Santino kept his eyes on me, leaving me feeling uncomfortable and exposed.
"This is a nasty cut," the nurse observed while she began to stitch me, "Another accident?"
"Danny." Santin answered her.
She nodded, a knowing look on her face. But there was something else I caught.
Concern.
I stayed silent until she was done.
"I need to use the restroom."
Santino glared at me, "Hold it. We're almost done."
"I can't. Please."
Enzo placed a hand on his shoulder, "I'll keep an eye on her."
Santino looked as if he may argue but then he nodded.
Enzo helped me from the bed, wrapping his jacket around my waist before we left the room.
"You seem a little too nice to be involved in this." I wasn't even acting, he didn't seem half as bad as Danny and Santino.
He shrugged as we walked down the hospital corridor, "My father was a De Luca, but my mother taught me kindness."
I assumed both parents were dead from the way he spoke, but I didn't want to push my luck by asking.
"I'm giving you five minutes." He said when we reached the bathroom door.
I nodded and went in. I stood in front of the basin and looked at myself in the mirror. My face had ugly purple marks on from where I had been hit.
I stood there for a few moments taking in how quickly my life had changes.
After everything I had been through, this is where I ended up.
With a sigh, I splashed some water on my face and walked out.
"See?" I motioned to myself, "I didn't try anything."
"Good. You're learning."
I scoffed, "What do you want me for?"
He didn't respond, he motioned back toward the way we had come from.
"This is stupid." I complained as I walked back toward the hospital room.
Santino was waiting at the door with his arms crossed over his chest, a scowl on his face.
"I have your medication. We're leaving." He announced.
I was debating whether I should make a scene or not as we walked toward the exit.
The hospital was filled with people, I was sure that they couldn't all answer to Santino.
This is your only chance. I told myself silently.
My hands began to sweat as I took in my surroundings. I knew that I couldn't outrun them, I would need to be smarter about it.
"Ah!" I screamed and doubled over, my hand on my abdomen.
"What is it now?" Santino asked.
"I don't know," I gasped, holding onto his shirt sleeve with my free hand, "Pain!" I contorted my face in the hopes he would fall for it.
He looked utterly uninterested.
Enzo, however, seemed concerned, rushing forward to my aid, "Let's get you back to the nurse."
Santino exhaled loudly, "I'll wait in the car. Hurry up."
Perfect. I only needed to get away from one of them. I was beginning to like my odds a little more.
I moaned and groaned as Enzo took me back, laying it on as thick as I could.
As luck would have it, his phone rang just as the same nurse from earlier entered the room.
He gave her a pointed look before leaving.
This was my chance.
"Please. You have to help me escape. I saw the look I your eyes when they mentioned Danny. I'm going to end up dead." I was taking a risk asking her to help me. And I waited with my heart speeding up in fear for her answer.
