Lucas was not going to drive Sophia home, so I offered myself to drive her home. Sophia looked at me, her eyes wide with surprise."Really, Liam? You'd do that?" she asked, her voice filled with disbelief.
I shrugged nonchalantly, trying my best to appear casual."Sure, why not? It's on my way." I hoped she didn't notice the slight tremor in my voice.
Lucas looked at me, his eyebrows raised, but he didn't say anything. He merely nodded, said his goodbyes, and walked away, leaving Sophia and me alone in the deserted school parking lot.
We made our way to my car, an old, beaten-up vehicle that had seen better days.I couldn't help but feel self-conscious. Sophia was used to being driven around in Lucas's sleek, high-end car. Would she judge my humble ride?
Once we hit the road, the silence in the car was deafening. I racked my brain for something to say, something to break the ice, but my mind was a blank canvas.
Finally, Sophia turned towards me, her hazel eyes sparkling in the dim light."Thank you for the ride, Liam," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't really want to go home with Lucas today."
I glanced at her, taken aback by her honesty."Anytime, Sophia," I replied, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Is everything okay with you two?" I ventured, hoping I wasn't crossing a line.
She sighed, looking out of the window at the passing scenery. "I don't know, Liam. It's complicated."She paused, before turning back to me. "But let's not talk about him. Tell me about you"
Our conversation flowed from there, touching on everything from our shared love for art to our dreams for the future.,
