~Godrics Hollow: Halloween 1980~
"Please be ok. Please be ok", Azalea Evans prayed allowed as she raced through the little village of Godrics Hollow to where her sister lived "Please be ok". She let out a shout of despair when she came to a halt outside the home where Lily, James and Ember resided. She stared at the ruins in dismay. She was too late! "Oh Lils I'm so sorry", she whispered, her eyes pricking with grief filled tears. Not wanting to be around the destruction any longer, Azalea walked away.
"No! Lily! No!" came an anguished cry from within the rubble, causing the witch to spin around and dash into the building. She hastily but carefully picked her way through the mess, doing her best to avoid looking at her brother-in-law's body as she skirted around him. She made her way up to the nursery when she found one of her oldest and most dearest of friends cradling her deceased sister: Severus Snape. As if he'd sensed that she was near, the potions master glanced up at her. "Lea", his voice thick with emotion "I'm sorry", he looked back down at the ginger in his arms "I never wanted this to happen".
"I know", Azalea said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder "this is not on you Severus. This is on the person they trusted. He is the reason that they all died".
"Y-you should know something", the grieving wizard sniffled, taking big gulps of air in an attempt to pull himself together. Despite the immense loss he was feeling, he had to give Lily's sister the news. "Only James and Lily died. Ember...she...she's alive".
The ginger let out a noise of shock, stumbling away from him. "She survived?" Azalea asked, weakly. Severus nods, carefully setting Lily's body on the nursery carpet. "H-how is that possible?"
"I don't know", the wizard admits, pushing himself to his feet.
"Where is she now?" the ginger somewhat demanded. Even though she wanted more than to mourn her sister and brother-in-law, the infants whereabouts took precedence. "Is she with him? Oh I hope she isn't. Severus please tell me she's not with that power-mad wizard!" she pleaded "I truly would die if she was...really I would!"
The potions master took hold of the now hysterical witch by her arms. "If you mean you-know-who, then know, she's not", he reassured her "Hagrid came for her before you arrived. He's taking her to your other sister".
"P-Petunia?! He's taking her to that bitch?!" Azalea exclaimed "what on earth would've possessed him to..." then the penny drops "Dumbledore. Always interfering that man" she glanced over at her sister's body, torn between giving Lily and James a proper burial and stopping the headmaster from making a very big mistake.
"Go", Severus said, softly, seeing the dilemma etched in the ginger's features "I'll put them to rest".
Azalea could barely contain her relief "Oh Sev", she breathed, hugging him gratefully "thank you". She released the wizard, giving her sister one last mournful glance before forcing herself to walk away.
The potions master took a breath, steeling himself what he had to do next. He stooped down and picked Lily's body up, holding her carefully as if she were as fragile as the flower of her namesake. "When the time comes I'll look out for her, I promise", he quietly vowed. Irrespective of his issues with James, Ember was still Lily's daughter...and for her, he would do anything to protect the child.
~Privet Drive~
Professor Albus Dumbledore paused at the start of Privet Drive when he saw the number of lampposts illuminating the street. "That won't do", he said quietly pulling out his deluminator and using it to remove the light from the lampposts. Now Privet Drive was completely in darkness save for the odd light here and there from porches and windows. It didn't matter about those lights as it was dark enough so that no muggles would see Hagrid on his flying motorcycle. A cat meowed, catching his attention. He glanced down and smiled at the feline whom he recognised as being Professor McGonagall in her animagus form. "I should have known that you would be here...Professor McGonagall".
Professor Dumbledore watched as the tabby cat grew, changing into the form of the transfiguration teacher "Good evening, Professor Dumbledore", she said politely. They walked past a couple of doors before McGonagall spoke again "Are the rumours true, Albus?"
She heard whispers that You-Know-Who had gone to Godric's Hollow to kill the Potter family. He'd managed to succeed in killing James and Lily but not Ember. The stories varied in what exactly happened to You-Know-Who after his killing curse rebounded when he tried to use it on the infant. Some said he died. Others say that he was extremely weakened. While McGonagall had hoped the former was true, she had a bad feeling it was most likely to be the latter.
"I'm afraid so, Professor. The good, and the bad", Dumbledore replied solemnly.
"And the girl?" McGonagall asked.
"Hagrid is bringing her", Dumbledore replied.
The Head of Gryffindor looked at the wizard in surprise "Do you think it wise to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?" she questioned.
"Ah, Professor, I would trust Hagrid with my life", the old wizard assured her.
There was a roar of an engine sounded in the sky making both professors look up in time to see a large flying motorcycle descending. It lands on the street, skidding a little before coming to a halt. Its rider, Rubeus Hagrid, pulls off his goggles. "Professor Dumbledore, Sir. Professor McGonagall", he greeted as he got off the motorcycle.
"No problems, I trust Hagrid?" Dumbledore asked.
The Keeper of Keys shook his head "No sir", he answered "the little lady fell asleep just as we were flying over Bristol". Hagrid then carefully removed the infant from the sling that rested across his chest.
"Albus, do you really think it's safe, leaving her with these people?" McGonagall asked quietly as they walked down the street towards number 4 where the Dursleys lived "I've been watching them all day. They're the worst sort of Muggles imaginable. They really are..."
"That may be the case but this the only place she would be safe", Dumbledore said interrupting her. McGonagall nodded in understanding.
"This girl will be famous. There won't be a child in our world who doesn't know her name", she pointed out.
"Exactly. She's better off growing up away from all that. Until she is ready", Dumbledore said before he gently placed Ember down on the ground by the front door. He then places a letter on top of her. "Good luck...Ember Potter", Dumbledore said softly after he stood.
Not long after they'd left, there was a loud crack announcing the arrival of Azalea. She didn't hesitate as she quietly approached the slumbering infant. The witch reached out, more than prepared to take her niece with her so she could go up in a home where she'd be wanted. However, much to her own surprise, she hesitated. Logic started to creep into the forefront of her mind. Yes, Ember would be treated better under her roof but she wouldn't truly be safe. No...as much as she didn't like it...the orphaned child was better off in the muggle world.
There, at least, she could go up as a normal child away from the infamy she would have within the wizarding world. "Goodbye little spark", she whispered, pressing a light kiss on the baby's forehead "till we meet again". Not long after the mournful witch left, the sleeping girl was approached by yet another person. This time it was a dark haired man wearing of all things...pirate garb.
He placed a pocket watch next to Dumbledore's letter. "Keep a weather eye on the horizon", he murmured "for I shall return".
