 - Chapter 1 -

Ayla Laurier sat comfortably on her knitted cushion on the living room floor, running her fingers over the edges of a cardboard box. She had just moved into a small cosy apartment in her childhood home, Bloemenmeer, in the Netherlands. The delivery truck's engine hummed in the distance as the delivery men bid their goodbye through the tinted window, leaving her in the quiet of her new living room.

Sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting a warm glow on the hardwood floor. Fresh flowers brightened the room with their colours. Ayla's long, wavy hair hung over her shoulders as she opened the boxes, her tan, freckled skin glowing in the sunlight.

Taking a deep breath, she started unpacking her belongings from the boxes. Among the familiar items neatly tucked between bubble wrap, she found a small, elegantly wrapped gift. Her pouty lips quivered into a smile as she recognized the delicate handwriting on the tag. It was from Julian, her former high school classmate. Slowly, she took out the gift from the box. The room blurred as memories from high school swept over her.

- Ayla -

I stood at my locker, the usual noise of students filling the hallway as they rushed to their next classes. The scent of books and perfume mixed in the air. The lockers around me rattled as students swapped out textbooks, their laughter echoing through the hall.

Then, amidst the chaos, Julian appeared. His charisma and warmth made him stand out. He approached, his smile lighting up the hallway.

"Hey, Ayla," he said, his voice a calming presence in the chaos.

We spoke about class for a bit, while getting our things from our lockers. Looking up into his dark brown eyes, time seemed to pause as he leaned against the locker next to mine, our laughter blending with the chatter in the background.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the hallway rush. Julian looked at me with a subtle smile. "Mind if I walk you to class?" he asked.

"Sure, I could use the company," I said, smiling back.

We walked together, our conversation mixing with the sounds of footsteps and closing doors.

"So, what's your plan after school today?" he asked.

"Probably just heading home. You?"

"Busy as always, but I wouldn't mind taking a detour if you wanna hang out?"

We got to my classroom. "I really don't mind," I laughed.

"See you around then," he smiled, walking away.

I found my seat in the classroom, the chatter around me fading into the background as I replayed our conversation in my mind. Ms. Alden, our teacher, clapped her hands for attention. "Good afternoon, class! I have a thrilling announcement. As the school year comes to an end, we'll be having a prom!"

A ripple of excitement ran through the students. Ms. Alden's eyes met mine briefly before she continued. "Start thinking about your prom dates, everyone. It's going to be a night to remember!"

My thoughts wandered back to Julian. Who would I go to prom with?

Ayla blinked, the memories fading as she returned to her living room. She stared at the gift in her hands, then continued unpacking. Her stomach growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten yet. She decided to walk to the closest bakery for some food.

The village was gleaming with sunshine. As she walked through the streets, she enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, the warm wind breezing past her. When she reached the bakery, she ordered a few pastries and bread. As she waited by the counter, the door opened with a jingle. She turned her head out of curiosity and was surprised to see her old high school teacher, Ms. Alden.

Surprise and curiosity mingled within Ayla as she met Ms. Alden's gaze, her mind racing with questions.

"Well, we've met again, after all these years. Hello, Ayla."
