On that day, Eliza could barely think of the heroes finding dead bodies and people in need of help, doctors running past her and police detaining the shooter.
There was one body that she cared more about. One body that she could think of in a haze on that horrible day.
Rue was in her arms, bleeding out from the two bullets that struck where his heart rested inside his chest. This wound was fatal.
The doctors just passed the two by to help others, knowing that with the wounds the boy gained through the shooting, Rue was a hopeless help and most likely wouldn't have the money to pay for the care he would need afterwards.
Rue knew he'd die, it was all his future had for him. So, he decided to pay back Eliza for her friendship to give her a peace of mind that he died happy. A pitiful sorry in a way.
"Eliza-chan... t-thank you... p-please... please die h-happy... that's h-how you can... can r-repay me...I-I… I-I'm sorry…"
. . .
Rue was dead, pulse coming to a stop and his heart's rushed beats coming to a painful end.
After a few seconds, Eliza's motionless body was dragged away from the boy. Once her mind set on what was happening, she began kicking and screaming for the heroes to put her down, begging to go back to Rue so he wouldn't be alone, but they wouldn't budge.
Once Eliza was dragged outside the school, she got glimpses of parents hugging their children, other parents going to drive to hospitals and... and the unlucky ones.
She stopped begging to see Rue once she saw these families.
These families were ruined, because of 1 man who was bored.
'Who ca-could do ti-this?..." Eliza asked herself as she felt the world stop.
The world was cruel, it was terrible, and even if she knew this for her whole life, she could never accept that fact fully.
Soon, she felt arms wrap around her as she heard sobs come from the voice of her older brother, tone filled with hints of relief and more tainted with worry and complete fear.
"Petite soeur! Oh mon Dieu, je remercie Dieu que tu vas bien !" Antoine cried in their mother's native language as he held her close, head on her shoulder.
Eliza hugged back, tears simmering out of her eyes as she tried not to recall what just happened in the school.
The gun shots, the screams and the death she saw pour into the eyes of the people who attended her school. It was all too much.
After a while, the police had requested some students come to the police department so they could get a backstory on what had happened before they arrived. How the outbreak of the school shooting started and how it ended up how it did.
When taking requests, Antoine had shown anger, yelling at the police for asking his sister, who just went through a traumatic event, to go and recall it to them. But Eliza accepted to go, making his brother cry as he reminded her she didn't have to, but she insisted.
Once in the questioning room, a police officer entered, sitting down in the rough can as he leaned forward.
“Name?” The man asked as he looked down at the notebook in his hand, used to note things down.
“Eliza Doe” Eliza responded with some hesitation and stutters.
“You're dad is causing a scene for you” The officer commented to her.
Eliza and her brother were not allowed to see their father, even though Antoine was an adult now, so hearing this made Eliza feel a bit better.
“Okay, Mrs Eliza Doe, tell me your day, I mean your school day” The officer asked as he leaned back, obviously tired.
