You hadn't felt this bad in a few years. Depression was your oldest enemy. It stole from you, time and memories lost to it each time.

Part of you had feared this would come sooner than later. You had lost your job because you refused to kick a customer of colour out.

The woman, you learned was Maria, thanked you and apologised profusely when she heard you lost your job, but you assured her going against your morals for a minimum wage job was one of the easier things to do.

You kept in contact with her, and she was the sweetest woman ever. You truly appreciated her friendship. She was currently occupied with the life of pregnancy, and you didn't want to worry her, so you gave her your best smile each time she visited.

The selfish part of you was glad your girlfriend was in an entirely different time zone filming a movie because hiding behind your best fake smile with her never worked.

Even over text, she could sense something was wrong. You just couldn't hide from her. You hated it and loved it at the same time.

Just last month, you had helped her through a troubling time, and you were so relieved to have actually helped her through it. You never wanted to disappoint her.

And falling into your pit of depression felt like letting her down so you did your best to appear okay. Alycia didn't even know you lost your job, which prompted her to not bother you at night, not wanting to interrupt your sleep.

The less selfish part felt horrible for hiding this from her, but it was just easier hiding behind a smile than explaining the frown.

Hey baby girl, I know you're asleep now, so hopefully, this makes you smile first thing in the morning.
I miss you so much and can't wait for production to be over. I love you to the moon and back. I think you're such an incredible human, and I'm thankful that you always make me happy.
Love you lots and lots, baby girl 😘🥰

You frowned and looked at the clock and saw it was two am. You sighed and rubbed your burning eyes, turning onto your side with a slight groan.

Now, facing away from your phone, you sighed, pulling the covers over your head, wanting to hide from the world.

You knew you had to sleep. You knew you had to take a shower. You knew you had to eat. You knew all this, but still, you couldn't muster the will to do it.

You tried sleeping, but your chest felt too heavy to breathe, and your mind was blank yet equally noisy.

Your eyes burned as fresh tears started once sleep refused to befall you. You gulped and dug the palms of your hands into your eyes, sitting up in bed.

Slouching and rubbing your eyes. When you stopped, there were spots in your vision, and you blinked until your vision went back to normal.

Then you stared at the foot of your bed where the teddybear Alycia had won you, sat staring at you.

"Don't judge me." You sighed.

You rubbed your palm against your chest, hoping to relieve the pain brewing there. Your heart felt empty yet like it was too heavy to be in your chest.

Weighed down by your heart, numbed from all the emotions you had once felt.
