It's been a week since my brother finally accepted it and welcomed Liam to be my boyfriend.
They've been best friends for years, and their bond shouldn't just end over something like this.
My friend Ava reminded me about our annual friendsary celebration.I've been looking forward to this year's event, especially because I can finally share with them how my brother feels about Liam and me.
"Liam?" I called out, hoping to catch him before he got too engrossed in his phone.
"Yes, Star?" He replied, setting his phone aside to give me his full attention.
"I'm going out with my friends," I announced, trying to keep my voice steady.
"With who?" He asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
"My friends Ava, Olivia, and Chloe. Don't you remember them?" I asked, surprised at his reaction.
"You will not be going," he declared, his eyes returning to his phone.
"Wha- why? You know them," I protested, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Did I agree?" He asked, not looking up from his screen.
"For what?" I was confused. This was a tradition we've had for years.
"To go out with them?" He clarified, his tone dismissive.
"We celebrate this every year, Liam," I tried to reason with him.
"So what?" He retorted, his indifference stinging.
"Liam, I need to go," I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice.
"I don't care if you do this every year, you will not be going anywhere," he responded, his voice firm.
"Liam, I really need to!" I protested, my voice rising in frustration.
"Didn't you hear me?" He asked, finally looking up from his phone.
"Liam, I-" I started, but he cut me off.
"No, Star, no."
I walked out of the room, tears welling up in my eyes. My phone buzzed with messages from my friends asking if I was coming. They'd be disappointed if I didn't show up, especially since I was already late.
My heart shattered into a million pieces as I typed out a response, telling them I couldn't make it because Liam didn't want me to go.I hit send, each word feeling like a betrayal to our friendship.
I wiped my tears, a heavy feeling settling in my chest.
I had no idea how things had gotten so complicated so quickly.
