"Hey, Liam?" My voice echoed in the nearly empty classroom, drawing his attention away from the phone he was engrossed in. His gaze met mine, and I felt a familiar flutter in my stomach.

But I quickly looked away, my shoulder brushing against his as I shifted uncomfortably. Through the corner of my eye, I could see Ava's silhouette in the doorway, her impatience almost tangible.

Liam's voice cut through the silence, his tone as calm and steady as always. "Yes, Star?"

The question hung in the air, heavy with the weight of my emotions. "Do you love me?" His brows furrowed slightly, and I could see him processing my sudden question.

His response was immediate, almost instinctive.

"Of course I do. Why else would I court you if I didn't?" His words held sincerity, but I couldn't help but question their truth.

"I love you too," I murmured, the words barely escaping my lips. I could feel his gaze on me, but I didn't dare meet it.

"Is that all?" His question caught me off guard. I simply nodded, forcing a smile onto my face.

"Yes, see you then." With that, I turned on my heel, leaving him behind as I exited the classroom.

Ava was waiting for me, her eyes filled with curiosity. "So, what happened?" She asked, her voice barely a whisper.

A smile spread across my face, my heart still fluttering from the exchange.

"He said that he loves me!" My voice held excitement, but Ava's reaction was not what I expected.

"That's it?" Her brow furrowed, a hint of disappointment flashing in her eyes.

I blinked, taken aback by her reaction. "Yeah?" I responded, my excitement fading.

"Sophia, you're so smart, but when it comes to love, you're so naive!" Her words stung, but I knew she was just looking out for me.

"I know, but he really proved himself while courting me. What seems to be the problem?" I asked, genuinely confused.

Chloe, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. "He never showed his controlling side."

Her words hit me like a ton of bricks, making me question everything I thought I knew about Liam.

"See?" Ava's voice held a triumphant tone, but all I felt was a growing sense of dread.

"Can we just give him a chance, please?" I pleaded, my voice barely a whisper.

I knew they were just looking out for me, but I also knew that I needed to make my own decisions, even if they led to mistakes. After all, that's how we learn, right?
