Amarnath walks out from the Bombay High Court canteen into the corridor with yet another information chit in his pocket, only to come face-to-face with Suraj Bhai. Two of his burly men accompany him, a foot behind.
'Amarnath Saab!' Suraj smiles, folding his hands. His purple shirt strikes brightly at everyone's eyes. 'What a surprise!'
'I should say that, Suraj,' Amarnath says, emphasising the absence of "Bhai". 'Which case hearing did you have today?'
'Some meaningless case,' Suraj waves his hand dismissively. 'They have blamed me without any evidence'
Amarnath nods, looking at the courtroom where Suraj appeared. 'Did you hire five new people for your team then?'
Suraj's face darkens. 'Aapne theek nahi kiya Saab. Kitty ko maarna nahi chahiye tha,' he says gravely. 'Haamara aadmi thaa woh.'
'That is a reason to shoot or not to shoot?' Amarnath asks.
Suraj presses his lips. His gold stud earring shines. Then, he breaks into a slow, deliberate smile.
Amarnath crosses his arms. 'People illegally smuggling guns can openly use them. Our government has chosen us, taught us how to use a gun and given it to us. But we should not use it?'
Suraj looks at his men and back at Amarnath. 'Sahi bol rahe hain DCP Saab!'
'We had come for Pramod. Kitty fired at us.'
'Kitty ... always reckless,' Suraj slaps his palm against the side of his leg, shaking his head. 'So it was an accident? How to believe that now?'
'Inquiry is going on. That's not an issue. Nayaa encounter karenge, toh they'll forget the previous one.' Amarnath says.
Surah listens in silence.
'Actually, you should be thankful that Pramod's chapter is over,' Amarnath points out.'He was targeting you.'
If Suraj has something else on his mind, his face doesn't disclose it. He nods as if he is considering Amarnath's statement.
'All the illegal weapons and items should be surrendered soon. If I come looking for it, things will be different,' Amarnath says now.
Suraj opens his mouth to say something.
'And the port should be clean of all unwanted activities,' Amarnath continues. 'Don't force us to bring sniffer dogs.'
They lock eyes. Amarnath's fixed and determined; Suraj's assessing and keen.
Then, Suraj blinks and breaks into a grin. 'Come home sometime, Saab. We'll have coffee and talk.'
'Come to my office. We'll talk how much ever you want. Make sure I'm there before coming. Otherwise, you'll have to sit and wait.'
Suraj grits his teeth and masks it up with a sketchy smile. 'Saab, that office may be yours, but the city is ours'
Amarnath is about to make a reply when he spots none other than Gauri Hedge, author of the scathing article in Bombay Samachar in a black coat atop her sari, conversing with a few other advocates.
