Freedom...

It hurt.

Every day. Every week. It just got worse and worse. She tried to talk to someone, anyone, about it, but Henry was always watching. Everywhere she went, he was there. She felt trapped, caged like a bird. She wasn't in control of her choices anymore.

She felt ridiculous. How could she have ignored her gut feeling? How could she be so stupid to believe anyone would ever love her? All she had ever been was a freak. She'd never be more than that; that was her truth.

Henry continued to get away with what he did all throughout the summer. She locked herself away in the space of her room every time she got home.

She couldn't face her sister. How could she face her when Bethany was everything she wasn't? She was free, she was...

Human. She was human. She was lucky. She was everything their parents wanted. But Mella? Mella was nothing but a burden that Bethany had to take care of all her life. Surely Bethany hated her, no?

Mella refused to believe anyone loved her now. She was disgusting, a freak of nature. She was a mistake that was never meant to happen. Even her own mother saw her as a monster.

She began to hyperventilate. The memories flashed through her mind non-stop. The blood, the pain, the insults. Glimpses of his face popped up every time she closed her eyes. She couldn't stop it. She couldn't help but remember.

"You MORON! I told you to have this room spotless when I got back!"

He yelled at her, again. She shrunk back at the sight of the glass bottle he held in his hand. She knew what would happen next. She shut her eyes tight as he swung, her cries echoing throughout the tiny house they all lived in. Her mother stood in the doorway, holding Bethany and Dan away from the sight.

Mella looked to her mother. Her eyes begged her to help, but her mother looked away. She refused to help. She refused to acknowledge what she went through, all because he was rich. He helped them get through the tough times after the death of her husband, so why should she go against him? She'd only get hurt trying to, and she couldn't risk that. She could only stay out of his way.

It was always like this. Mella was shunned by her step-father after he found out she was half-monster, using her to do the chores. He didn't treat her like a child. He saw her as inferior, as nothing more than a freak of nature. He refused to acknowledge her humanity.

His morals did not apply to her. She wasn't human in his eyes, so he treated her that way. He didn't care; he saw it right to treat her that way.

She hated that. She hated him. She wanted him dead. She wanted him to suffer, to feel what she felt. As she struggled through his beating. She waited until they left to pour her tears out, her hand shifting into a claw, and that day, she let her rage control her.

She snapped out of her thoughts, shaking her head as she wiped her tears. She left her room, her stomach growling with hunger. As she left the hallway, she was quickly stopped by Bethany, who grabbed her shoulders with a worried gaze.

"Mella, please tell me what's going on! Why won't you just talk to me?? Who's hurting you?!" Bethany begged her sister to talk to her, but Mella refused to tell her. She simply asked for some food.

Mella had once again arrived back home early in the morning, but something felt different. She was still injured, but she had immediately called for her older sister once she opened the door. She cried as Bethany rushed to her side, guiding her to the couch. "Mella I-"

"I'm sorry for not telling you anything! I-I was just so scared bec-because Henry threatened me to not say anything! H-He's been so mean a-and cruel, and he hurts me so much! I-I don't even know what I did wrong!" Mella cried out as she rambled on about all the horrible things Henry had been doing.

Bethany felt shocked at first, but then she grew angry. She was angry that Henry had been doing all of this to her dear sister, and she had been so nice to him. She TRUSTED him to take care of her sister, yet he failed to do that. Mella noticed how Bethany's face switched from concern to complete hatred. "B-Beth-"

"You need to break up with Henry."

┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉

"What do you mean we're OVER?!"

Mella had once again been taken to Henry's house, however this time, she confronted him. She told him everything she believed, and with the courage she built up, she broke up with him.

Henry grabbed Mella by the collar of her shirt, scaring her. She started to tear up, but she kept her courage, her gaze hardening. "You...you heard me! I'm not going to deal with all the pain you put me through! We're done!" She yelled at him, frustrating him.

How dare she try to leave him? She belonged to him, she had no choice to leave! His heart rate increased as the anger boiled inside him. He wouldn't let her leave. He needed her!

He raised a hand, about to slap her, when out of nowhere, he was suddenly kicked in the stomach. Mella, having flinched and turned away with her eyes closed, slowly turned back when nothing followed. When she looked, she saw Henry on the floor. . .with Bethany pinning him down on the floor using her heel. Her heel dug into his stomach, earning a pained gasp from Henry.

"Don't. Even. Think about it. You keep your disgusting hands off of my dear sister, or else I'll cut them off!" Bethany glared down at Henry. He grew fearful, feeling his sins crawl up his back. He didn't know how scary Bethany was when she was angry. How did she even find out about what was going on?

His eyes then grew dark as he slowly looked over at Mella. "Y o u. You TOLD HE- AGH-!" Henry felt Bethany's heel push his head into the floor. "Don't even try it." Bethany kicked his head, successfully knocking him out.

She picked Mella up, carrying her on her back, and left. The two headed home, and once they got there, Bethany checked Mella for any new injuries.

She let out a sigh of relief when she found nothing new. She hugged Mella tightly as she cried into her shoulder, rubbing her back and whispering comforting words.

She could only hope Henry would be smart and stay away for good.
