Tongue Tied

It was sunny outside. I knew this because I was facing towards the sun and I was getting blinded.

I sat on a curb outside with my new friend, James.

As I was just staring at the sun James was smiling at me.

You'd expect a boy that wants power to be selfish and an asshole. And he might be, but he's the only one who offered to be my friend so he's good in my books.

I continued to squint at the sun. I don't know what I was trying to accomplish. I guess I'd rather look forward than look at James, because I wouldn't know what to say.

"You didn't bring a hat?" James asked softly.

I paused for a moment then I nodded.

James reached beside him and in his hand was a hat. All I was wondering was, WHERE THE HECK DID THAT THING COME FROM!

"Here you go" James said as he gave the hat to me.

I stared at for a moment before putting it on. Then we sat quiet for the rest of the recess.

The bell rang to go inside and for the first time I didn't want to. I finally get why the kids love recess so much. Sucks that I realized this now. Next year I won't get a recess. I'll be in high school. That is if I get a next year. The prophecy says I'm destined to die by then. I sighed again.

Everyone started to head inside and before I got in the door James took the hat off my head. So momentarily I was blinded by the sun's arrays. But literally a millisecond later I was inside so all is good.

James looked at me. I squinted a bit so he must've noticed.

"Oh sorry, did you still need that?" James asked.

He looked like he genuinely cared.

I paused for a moment again. Taking this in. How. How does he care? How would anyone care?

"It's okay we're inside now." I said.

You could tell in his eyes he felt bad.

"Sorry." James voice broke.

James looked away. I should say something. Really it wasn't a big deal.

As soon as I was about to say something some girl yelled, "Hey he's hanging out with the prophecy kid."

She was mocking James.

"Does he have a death wish or something?" A boy mocked.

Laughs were going around.

I was mad.

I looked at James. He seemed sad.

Now is really not the time!

Couldn't they mock us another time?

Now I definitely wanted to say something.

However, I got shoved forward by the crowd and while I was getting pushed everyone continued to mock James.

As I moved forward there was only one person who didn't mock him.

I stared at her for a moment.

It looked like she wanted to say something but she was tongue tied.

As I got in class I feel so bad that I didn't say anything.

Occasionally, I looked behind me to see how James was doing.

Every single time I checked he had his head down and a sad expression on his face.

I looked around the class.

Everyone here mocked him.

I felt mad.

Suddenly when I turned my head my anger went away.

It was her. The only person that didn't say anything.

I had a crush on her since fifth grade.

Her name is Miranda Ashton.

I wanted to talk with her so many times but because of the prophecy I learned to distance myself from people.

If I were to involve her in this I would never forgive myself.
