Today we live in an age that procrastination and laziness are the top priority . But the government doesn't realize that. Neither do the people. The government takes action of pure stupidity. Not even leaving there prissy little marble offices to check on the territories. We don't even have a choice since the rebellion happened over nearly a century ago. There's o way out. Once your in your in for good. No turning back now, not ever. Food rations are getting smaller. The education system is being cut. Soon natural light will never be seen. No one cares that's the sad part no one gives a shit about whats happening. Except for us. It seems that Blake, Shelby, Joey, and I, Clair are the only ones who truly genuinely care.
We slowly walked to the all grade school house quietly, since only students and the employed are let out at this hour. By we I mean Blake Shelby, Joey and I
"It seem different today" Joey whispered in my ear.
"How" I whispered back so quiet I almost couldn't here myself
"Well, it's quieter than usual"
" I know"
"No talking!" A tunneler shouted at us as we passed.
A tunneler is a guard to the outside. I wanted to shout back saying yeah no talking, but I just couldn't. Instead I gave him a puzzled look.
"We are mourning today for the presidents loss." Then I remembered from the morning wake up call announcements. The presidents son died yesterday. Almost everyone saw it coming. He was at least 500 pounds if not 600. Probably with high blood pressure. "Well children keep moving." I nod and fasten my pace.
"Well children, today we are mourning so for the the first ten minutes of class
I just want all of us to sit quietly. No drawing, reading, or sleeping. Just sit and be quiet." Mrs. Julius
That's when it happened. All the lights turned off, only the dim emergency light glows in the back. You can barely see Mrs. Julius. I turn to Shelby her eyes probably could not be wider. They almost glowed brighter than the emergency light. Joey and Blake had carbon copies of Shelby's expression.
A crackle of the built in microphone goes off and a familiar voice speaks "Well my nation look what has happened you did this to yourselves my son his gone he paid his deed. Now you pay yours, all power is cut except emergency lights in all homes, businesses, and street lights. I truly hope you have kept up on your taxes so you have at least emergency lights. Well that's it for now, farewell." President Ferron that's who the voice belonged to. Him the worst most nasty person belonging to mankind. Him. The three letter word rang in my ears. Him. Him. Him.
Almost everyone in the school house rushed over to the windows at once. I feel bad for the little five and six year olds so I grab Shelby's little brother and Blake grabs his little sisters. We look it at the streets. Since Blake and I are the tallest we can easily see over everyone's heads. The street is dark except for the barely glowing street lights glowing so dimly they are almost pointless to have. The most shocking thing of all of this is the tunnelers. They stand there. They stand there as nothing ever happened. But something did happen something very large happened.
"Well. Back to class, I guess." Mrs. Julius says. With a sad tone in her voice
We sit there helpless like fish out of water. So many thoughts go through my head. The day drags on. And on. And on. I take notes that I have taken since I was five I draw little pictures in the margins of my paper. The lessons get easier as the years progress. Thank god next year is my last year. And Joeys too I realize. Two more for Shelby and one more for Blake.
The teachers desk bell rings. I stand up pivot and walk out the door. We walk to my house. Joey, Shelby, and Blake stay with my family during the week since they have working parents and my mother just stays at home.
We walk in the door. There are candles lit everywhere. "MOM didn't you pay?!"
"I did its just the light is so dim."
"Oh, well we will be upstairs in my room..."
"Already filled with candles and light"
"Thanks" I mutter and take the stairs two at a time. I open the door Mablines (my little sister),ugly orange tabby cat is sitting on my bed tearing at my doll. "SHOO! GO! GET OUT! NOW!" I yell at it and sprints out the room. My doll my dad gave it to me before he left. Once out you can't come in. That's life's motto now. My eyes begin to fill with tears, the dolls head is barely connected to her body. I set her down gently.I'll fix it later. As quickly as I could I jumped into my friends conversation.
"What happened today was weird" Joey said
"And scary" Shelby added.
"You don't think it was partly because of the rebellion" Blake said.
"There is no rebellion " I added quickly in a strong firm voice.
"But Claire come on you know what your dad-"
"Shut up Blake! Don't bring him up its none of your business!"
"Claire," Blake said gently and grabbed my hand "You're practically my sister I've known you forever now"
I looked away. But I saw what he was saying, he had a point.
Shelby and joey exchanged looks and mouthed something to Blake that looked like "Should we tell her?"
"Tell me what?!"
"Nothing" they all said in unison.
"Okay. But what happened today wasn't a mistake."
"Obviously" Shelby said.
"No no what I'm saying is did you see the looks on the tunnelers faces? They were expressionless they knew it was coming. This was planned. Even before his son died yesterday. This has been planed for a while."
"I gotta say you have a good point there Clairiss. I saw that too." Blake said I cringed I absolutely hate being called Clairiss.
The cat walked into the room again. There was a small rock by my bed I threw it at the cat. It hit it in the eye. It yelped and ran away.
"I think that cat just lost all vision in its right eye" Joey said laughing.
"But in all seriousness we need to do something about all this. Another note have you guys realized we have been getting less and less food. Another thing you guys might not have noticed -"
"But there's a little yellow sticker under the stairs at the school house. Yeah I saw it too." Blake said totally interrupting me. Oh well.
"We have to do something. Agreed?" I stick my fist out.
"Agreed." Blake says and puts his hand on my fist.
"Agreed." Joey says and puts his hand in.
"Agreed. But we're still in school. I'm 16, Joey's 17, Claire your 18 and Blake your 19."
"Where there's a will there's a way" I say.
"Let's do this" Blake says giving me a devilish smile.
"We'll start planning tomorrow" I say realizing its nearly ten, almost curfew.
"Goodnight group!" We all say in unison as we climb into our bunks. It's been our little tradition since we all started school. I'm asleep almost instantly dreaming of our escape.
