Claire was drinking coffee and eating fruit on the terrace outside the Bangkok hotel with three of her cabin crew colleagues, enjoying being outdoors before the heat and humidity would kick in later. The crew had just a few more hours to relax before they would have to head to the airport to work the return flight to London.
As they chatted, the peaceful breakfast was interrupted by a loud, powerful motorcycle pulling up outside the entrance to the hotel. Claire peered over the balcony to see what was going on and audibly gasped as she saw Joanna, one the junior members of her crew, swing her leg off the bike and passionately kiss the man who was dropping her off. It wasn't so much the bike, the man or even the kiss that shocked Claire, but what Joanna was wearing. Her entire outfit consisted of a bikini, white stiletto heels and a trucker-style baseball hat from under which her dark hair fell down her back.
Joanna sauntered into the hotel, her hips swinging, without a hint of self consciousness. Claire, thinking quickly, snapped a photograph of the scene and texted it to Joanna with a simple question: "What are you doing?"
Joanna glanced at her phone, shrugged, and continued into the hotel. She found Claire and her colleagues on the terrace, and without missing a beat, she plopped down in a chair next to Claire and flashed her an innocent smile. "Morning, Claire," she said sweetly. "Isn't it a lovely day?"
Claire looked at her, speechless. The other women waited with rapt attention to see what would happen next. Eventually, Claire regained the power of speech. "Good morning, Joanna," she said quietly and turning to the others, "would you excuse me ladies? I'll see you later ready for the shuttle." And with that, Claire headed to the elevator.
"What have you been up to, you little minx?" teased one of Jonanna's colleagues, "Looks like you had quite a night."
Joanna grinned and shrugged nonchalantly, "Oh, you know, just enjoying the layover". Her colleagues exchanged knowing glances, amused by her casual response. They all knew that Claire would not be pleased with Joanna's appearance and behavior. "Claire isn't going to just walk out of here and forget about it you know" one of them warned her. "She'll be in her room now, planning what to do about it."
Joanna smiled confidently but up on the twentieth floor, Claire was doing exactly what had just been predicted. Apart from the embarrassment to the airline and the disrespect to Claire herself, Joanna had placed herself in danger and needed to understand how unacceptable her behavior was.
Claire picked up her phone and began to type another text to Joanna: "Please come to my room 30 minutes before our shuttle pick up. We'll discuss this morning's incident then. In the meantime get some sleep."
She hit send and sat back in her chair, feeling a mixture of anger and disappointment. She knew that Joanna was popular with the crew and had a knack for talking her way out of trouble. Disciplining her might not go down well with her friends, but letting her get away with it would completely undermine Claire's authority.
Joanna read the text from Claire and sighed. She knew she had crossed a line, but she also wasn't going to let Claire push her around. She decided to snooze by the pool until it was time to get into uniform for that evening's flight.
When she finally got to Claire's room, Joanna knocked on the door and waited. Claire opened it, glaring at her. "Come in," she said coldly. Joanna walked in, having swapped the bikini for her airline uniform and the stilettos for high, but regulation pumps.
"I'm tempted to say you have some explaining to do, Joanna," Claire said, sitting down in a chair and gesturing for Joanna to take the only other seat. "but I'm not going to give you the slightest opportunity to talk your way out of this." Leaning forward she locked eyes with Joanna as she spoke, "You're going to be punished, here and now, for your behavior last night and this morning."
