My boyfriend Mat was out today. He was also quite far away. I was home alone and everything was doing fine until, I suddenly started feeling breathless, and sort of dizzy. I felt a sudden sense of doom and fear, like I was going to die then and there. I quickly realised that it was a panic attack coming. I've had them before so I knew what to do. I searched for my phone and immediately dialled Mat's number and took a few deep breathes.
It started ringing, Mat answered my call 5 seconds later, " Evie? You alright?" He answered the call. "Mat.. can you come home... please?" My voice trembled. "... Yeah, yeah, of course I can, darling... what's up? has something happened?" He spoke over the phone softly. "I think I'm having another...." I then started shaking, my breath trembling. I gulped, "Another panic attack..." I then continued. "Okay, darling. I'm on my way now, okay? Just try to steady your breathing and I'll be there in 5." Mat spoke, "I'm gonna stay on the phone with you to check up on you though, okay?" Mat told me. "Okay." I started taking deep breathes. "That's it, sweetheart. I'm gonna be there as soon as possible, alright?" Mat soothed me over the phone. "You can just listen to my voice for now." Mat spoke again. "Do you want to try the 54321 method?" Mat offered. "Yes please." I breathed, "Okay, my dear. Name five things you can see." Mat spoke, awaiting my response.
"My phone." I spoke. "Mhm?" Mat replied. "My bed." I spoke again, "Yup." He replied. "The light switch." I said. "Mm?" Mat said. "Um... the door..." I started getting unsure, I stopped speaking, "It's alright, you're doing well so far, keep going." Mat spoke. "One more thing that you can see?" Mat questioned. "The floor?" I answered, "Wahey! great!" Mat praised me. "Okay, 4 things you can...touch?" Mat asked. "... Uh, my hair... my... clothes... my bedsheet... and, my... face?" I answered. "Three things you can hear, love?" Mat asked. I had felt myself calm down. "Your voice, the traffic, and the wind." I answered. "Good girl, two things you can smell?" Mat asked again, "The washing powder on my bedsheet, and... uh, incense?" I answered. Mat stayed quiet for a few seconds, "I'm proud of you." He giggled. "Right, my love, one thing you can taste?" Mat asked, "Mint, I just had mint flavoured sweets." I giggled. Mat giggled too. "Oh really? Well, you seem calmer now, I'm outside, by the way." Mat spoke, I heard his car outside the house, as I then heard the jingling of his keys and, before I knew it, saw him in front of me.
He smiled at the sight of me, I did the same. He then walked over to me and cuddled with me, "It's gonna be alright..." He whispered in my ear. He stayed there with me for the rest of the day as we fell asleep in each others arms.
