Icarus sank.

Churning water clouded her vision. Something big and white passed beside her. It was so cold. She was so cold. Bubbles crept up her throat. She watched them fly upwards.

She was supposed to follow them. But that's not how Icarus' story ends. Most people forget, because they are so enraptured by the perfect tragedy of being kissed by the sun and the exhilaration and the joy and the falling anyway, where Icarus fell to.

Fishermen pulled his golden mangled body out of the waves. Sea nymphs spotted the plumes of feathers on the rocks. Passerbyers saw an angel crash into the waves.

Icarus fell.

Icarus sank.

Because dead boys don't fly, and dead girls don't go to court.
